Condition A-: expertly-repaired tear at lower right edge; creases and minor staining in margins and image. Don arrived in Paris from Bucharest during World War I. Before long, through a fortuitous connection with François André, he had completely acquainted himself with "Tout-Paris." André was the owner of casinos in Deauville, Cannes and La Baule, and singled Don out as his favorite designer and decorator. He commissioned Don to design posters and decorate balls and gala events for his wealthy clients. Rare.

Condition A- deux traces de déchirures. L'affiche nous montre la Méditerranée, plus exactement la baie des anges de Nice, figurée par ce front de mer où calèches et voitures de sport paradent devant des anges. Il faut souligner que sur cette rare affiche, l'artiste a utilisé un style assez proche de celui de Raoul Dufy.

He had him design posters and decorate balls and gala events for his rich clients. Don also worked for show business clients, with whom he became associated through his wife, the famous French actress Berthe Bovy. Suzy Prim (1896-1995) was a major French theatre and movie star who appeared in over 80 films. This poster is a classic Don portrait, with the elegant performer set starkly against a solid colored background, and it is singularly eye-catching as a result.

          Jane Marny was a French actress and singer who was active in the 1930's and 1940's in France. Like many other entertainers at the time of the creation of this poster in 1930, they commissioned an artist to dreate a favorable image of themselves in a poster and they would then distribute that image in advance of their performances during a tour of the country. Many other French performers including Josephine Baker and Maurice Chevalier used similarly styled posters in that era. It signified that the artist was of some prominence and worthwhile seeing in performance. The artist of this image was Jean Don (1900 – 1985) who an artist as well as an illustrator. He had a small body of work in the field of posters and they are well crafted and attractive graphics. This is an original vintage poster. It is not a reproduction. The Bal des Petits Lits Blancs was one of Paris' major charity balls held each year to benefit children's hospitals. Year after year, the event was heralded by posters designed by the most fashionable illustrators in Paris, including Domergue, Barbier and Lepape. Rare. Reclame 69.
