Oscar Domínguez Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, Object Artist, b. 1906 - d. 1957

Born in San Cristóbal de La Laguna on the island of Tenerife, on the Canary Islands Spain, Domínguez spent his youth with his grandmother in Tacoronte and devoted himself to painting at a young age after suffering a serious illness which affected his growth and caused a progressive deformation of his facial bone frame and limbs.

He went to Paris at 21 where he first worked for his father in the central market of Les Halles, and spent his nights diving in cabarets. He then frequented some art schools, and visited galleries and museums.

He was rapidly attracted by avant-garde painters, notably Yves Tanguy and Pablo Picasso, whose influences were visible in his first works. At 25 he painted a self-portrait full of premonition as he showed himself with a deformed hand and with the veins of his arm cut. He chose to kill himself 27 years later by cutting his veins.

In 1933 Domínguez met André Breton, a theoretician of Surrealism, and Paul Éluard, known as the poet of this movement, and took part a year later in the Surrealist exhibition held in Copenhagen and those of London and Tenerife in 1936. Domínguez was also working in Paris at the Atelier 17.[2]

He popularized the Russian-invented technique of decalcomania as a Surrealist automatic technique in 1936, using gouache spread thinly on a sheet of paper or other surface (glass has been used), which is then pressed onto another surface such as a canvas. Automatism, invented by Andre Breton, was important for the Surrealists as a means of channeling their subconscious through art. Dominguez's style influenced many artists including Max Ernst, Hans Bellmer, Remedios Varo and Dutch poet and translator Gertrude Pape.[3]

His 1937 oil painting The Infernal Machine sold for 2 770 000 FF (US$404,375) on June 8, 2000 at Drouot-Montaigne in Paris.

His 1933 oil painting Roma's portrait sold for 902,500 GBP (US$1,469,270) on Feb. 4. 2014 at Christie's in London.[4]

In 1952 he started an affair with Marie-Laure de Noailles, who called him "putchie".[5]

Domínguez committed suicide December 31, 1957, by slitting his wrists in the bath. Marie-Laure arranged to have him interred in the Bischoffsheim family mausoleum in the Montparnasse cemetery

OSCAR DOMÍNGUEZ PALAZÓN (La Laguna, Tenerife, 1906 - Paris, 1957). "Nature morte aux fruits", 1945. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. With label of the Sala Parés on the back. Attached certificate issued by Ana Mª Vázquez de Parga. Measurements: 30 x 40,5 cm; 58 x 68 cm (frame). Still life of Óscar Domínguez, belonging to his maturity stage. With boldness, the Canary painter reduces the world to a puzzle of cut fragments, reduced to elementary forms and applications of color by planes. Thus, plates and fountains are reduced to circles and ovals, on which cherries and rounded oranges rest. The window is a rectangle that holds a solid section of sea and a piece of sky. A curtain falls with vertical lines like stakes. The cleanness of the forms is enhanced by the use of a thick black line. It is worth mentioning that the work is certified by Ana Vázquez de Parga, who has made a great study of the works of Oscar Domínguez, highlighting her participation as curator of the exhibition "Oscar Domínguez 1926-1957, a retrospective". Domínguez belonged to the Generation of 1927, and invented the decalcomania, a pictorial technique that consists of applying black gouache on a piece of paper, which is placed on top of another sheet on which a light pressure is exerted, to finally peel off both papers before they dry. In 1927, on family business, Domínguez traveled to Paris for the first time. He returned the following year and came into contact with the surrealist movement, and especially with its central figure, André Breton. This group would mark his career until he was expelled for approaching Picasso's painting. He made his individual debut in 1933, at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In 1935 he participated in the Surrealist Exhibition of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where he signed the manifesto "Du temps que les surréalistes aviaient raison". Also important are his surrealist objects, some of which he exhibited in Paris, at the Exposition Surréaliste d'Objets de la Galerie Charles Ratton in 1936. Because of the Civil War he went into exile in France, spending practically the rest of his days in the capital. The artist lived the last years of his life as a prisoner of madness after suffering from acromegaly, a degenerative disease that deformed his physique and made his skull grow extraordinarily. On New Year's Eve 1957 he committed suicide in Paris, completely drunk, opening his veins in the bathroom of a party given by his friend, the Viscountess of Noaffles. Domínguez is today considered one of the world's greatest exponents of the Spanish historical avant-garde that developed in Paris during the first decades of the 20th century. In general, the figures and objects that make up his surrealist works contain magical, mechanistic and sexual references, many of them set in the Canary Islands landscape despite the fact that he lived most of his life in Paris. The most important contribution that Óscar Domínguez made to surrealism was the invention of decalcomania or decalcomania, a technique in which psychic automatism played an absolute leading role. This procedure had a magnificent acceptance among the surrealists who quickly adopted it and later influenced abstract expressionist painting. Decalcomania consists of introducing liquid black gouache between two sheets of paper by pressing them in an uncontrolled way. Another of his contributions to the surrealist movement was the theory of the petrification of time through which he began to introduce crystallized forms and structures of angular networks in his compositions. There are petrifactions of this style in the paintings of René Magritte.

            Est: €18,000 - €20,000

OSCAR DOMÍNGUEZ PALAZÓN (La Laguna, Tenerife, 1906 - Paris, 1957). "La ville, la nuite", 1954. Oil on canvas. Attached certificate issued by Ana Mª Vázquez de Parga in 2010. Measurements: 14 x 22 cm; 32 x 40 cm (frame). This work, which belongs to the last period of Oscar Domínguez's artistic career, shows in its composition that certainly tragic atmosphere, which characterises the paintings of this period. A feeling that stemmed from the artist's personal situation, who a year before this painting was executed said: "This year has been a terrible thing; I have lost more than ten friends whom I loved deeply". This was a period in which he returned to working with decalcomania, a technique in which he was a pioneer. This vibrant aesthetic, where chance intervenes, transforming the work, are characteristics that are echoed in the piece presented at Setdart, where Domínguez reaches the sublimation of forms, which evaporate, generating a confused and vibrant nocturnal view. It is worth mentioning that the work is certified by Ana Vázquez de Parga, who has made a great study of the works of Oscar Domínguez, highlighting her participation as curator of the exhibition "Oscar Domínguez 1926-1957, a retrospective". Domínguez belonged to the Generation of 1927, and invented decalcomania, a pictorial technique which consists of applying black gouache to a sheet of paper, which is then placed on top of another sheet of paper on which slight pressure is exerted, in order to finally peel off both papers before they dry. In 1927, on family business, Domínguez travelled to Paris for the first time. He returned the following year and came into contact with the Surrealist movement, and especially with its central figure, André Breton. This group was to mark his career until he was expelled from the group for approaching Picasso's painting. He made his individual debut in 1933, at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In 1935 he took part in the Surrealist Exhibition in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where he signed the manifesto "Du temps que les surréalistes aviaient raison". His surrealist objects are also important, some of which he exhibited in Paris at the Exposition Surréaliste d'Objets de la Galerie Charles Ratton in 1936. Because of the Civil War he went into exile in France, spending practically the rest of his days in the capital. The artist lived the last years of his life as a prisoner of madness after suffering from acromegaly, a degenerative disease that deformed his physique and caused his skull to grow extraordinarily large. On New Year's Eve 1957 he committed suicide in Paris, completely drunk, by slitting his wrists in the bathroom of a party given by his friend, the Vicomtesse de Noaffles. Domínguez is today considered one of the world's leading exponents of the Spanish historical avant-garde that emerged in Paris during the first decades of the 20th century. In general, the figures and objects that make up his surrealist works contain magical, mechanistic and sexual references, many of them set in the Canary Islands landscape despite the fact that he lived most of his life in Paris. The most important contribution that Óscar Domínguez made to surrealism was the invention of decalcomania or decalcomania, a technique in which psychic automatism played a leading role. This procedure was very well received by the Surrealists, who quickly adopted it and subsequently influenced Abstract Expressionist painting. Decalcomania consists of introducing liquid black gouache between two sheets of paper by pressing them together in an uncontrolled manner. Another of his contributions to the Surrealist movement was the theory of the petrification of time through which he began to introduce crystallised forms and angular net structures into his compositions. Petrifications of this style can be found in the paintings of René Magritte.

Óscar Domínguez,  Spanish 1906–1957 -  Figure with arrow;  ink on paper, signed lower right 'Dominquez' and with studio stamp to the reverse 'Etude de Me Rheims Atelier Oscar Dominquez', 18 x 12.5 cm (ARR) Provenance: Paris, Hotel Drouot, Me Rheims, Atelier Oscar Dominquez, 14th November 1960; private collection Note:  this is a highly characteristic of Domínguez's angular yet biomorphic style, demonstrating his centrality to the Surrealist movement in Paris of the 1930s. Figures with a bow and arrow appear repeatedly in his oeuvre, creating a symbolic duality that is typical in his work, Cupid and the hunter, love and death.  Domínguez appeared in major Surrealist exhibitions of the 1930s, in Copenhagen, Tenerife and London, alongside artists including Eileen Agar, Victor Brauner and Pablo Picasso.
