Domenichino Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Freskant, b. 1581 - d. 1641

Domenico Zampieri, known as Domenichino for his shortness (October 21, 1581 – April 6, 1641), was an Italian Baroque painter of the Bolognese or Carracci School of painters.

Domenichino was born in Bologna, son of a shoemaker, and there initially studied under Denis Calvaert. After quarreling with Calvaert, he left to work in the Accademia degli Incamminati of the Carracci where, because of his small stature, he was nicknamed Domenichino, meaning "little Domenico" in Italian. He left Bologna for Rome in 1602 and became one of the most talented apprentices to emerge from Annibale Carracci's supervision. As a young artist in Rome he lived with his slightly older Bolognese colleagues Albani and Guido Reni, and worked alongside Lanfranco, who later would become a chief rival.

In addition to assisting Annibale with completion of his frescoes in the Galleria Farnese, including A Virgin with a Unicorn (c. 1604–05), he painted three of his own frescoes in the Loggia del Giardino of the Palazzo Farnese c. 1603–04. With the support of Monsignor Giovanni Battista Agucchi, the maggiordomo to Cardinal Aldobrandini and later Gregory XV, and Giovanni's brother Cardinal Girolamo Agucchi, Domenichino obtained further commissions in Rome. His most important project of the first decade was decoration of the Cappella dei Santissimi Fondatori in the medieval basilica of the Abbey of Grottaferrata (1608–1610), some 20 kilometers outside Rome, where Odoardo Farnese was the titular abbot. Meanwhile, he had completed frescoes c. 1604–05 in the church of Sant'Onofrio, feigned stucco decoration of 1606–07 in the Palazzo Mattei, a large scene of The Flagellation of St. Andrew at San Gregorio Magno, painted in competition with a fresco by Reni that faces it, and a ceiling with Scenes from the Life of Diana, 1609, in the Villa Odescalchi at Bassano di Sutri (today Bassano Romano).

Following Annibale Carracci's death in 1609, the pupils who had followed Annibale's Roman style, including Domenichino and Francesco Albani, were not as successful at gaining the most prestigious commissions as Guido Reni. As Donald Posner stated in his influential thesis, The Roman Style of Annibale Carracci and His School, ‘...it should be stressed that the severe classicism of Annibale’s late style had an immediate life in Rome of only about a lustrum [five years].’[1] In turn, the Bolognese biographer Malvasia states that 'only Guido [Reni] was put ahead of everyone else, Guido alone proclaimed and well treated, while [Domenichino], on the contrary, was either not recognized or constantly mistreated in the fees he got, so that he was left without commissions and rejected. Therefore, he was forced to go begging for work, with much effort, through intermediaries, and at any price... the same had been true of the Flagellation of Saint Andrew, which had been painted for a hundred and fifty scudi, whereas in the case of the Adoration of the Cross on the opposite wall four hundred scudi had gone to Guido.' [2]

One of Domenichino's masterpieces, his frescoes of Scenes of the Life of Saint Cecilia in the Polet Chapel of San Luigi dei Francesi, was commissioned in 1612 and completed in 1615. Concurrently he painted his first, and most celebrated, altarpiece, The Last Communion of St. Jerome for the church of San Girolamo della Carità (signed and dated, 1614). It subsequently would be judged as being comparable to Raphael's great Transfiguration and even as "the best picture in the world".
Domenichino – Landscape with Tobias

By late 1616, Domenichino had designed the coffered ceiling with The Assumption of the Virgin in Santa Maria in Trastevere; and he had begun a cycle of ten frescoes depicting the Life of Apollo in a garden pavilion of the Villa Aldobrandini (Belvedere) in Frascati, where he was assisted by Giovanni Battista Viola, a Bolognese artist who, like Domenichino himself, was a pioneer in the development of classicistic landscape painting. From 1617 until 1621, Domenichino was absent from Rome, working in Bologna and at Fano, where during 1618–19 he frescoed the Nolfi chapel of the Fano Cathedral with Scenes from the Life of the Virgin.

With the election of a Bolognese pope (Gregory XV) in 1621, Domenichino returned to Rome. Appointed Papal Architect (he built little but left drawings for various projects, most notably for the façade of Sant'Andrea della Valle and for the plan of Sant'Ignazio, both in Rome), he nonetheless continued to be most active as a painter, obtaining many commissions for altarpieces in Roman churches (San Lorenzo in Miranda, 1626–27, SS. Giovanni Evangelista e Petronio dei Bolognesi, 1626–1629, Santa Maria della Vittoria, 1629–30, and St. Peter's, 1625–1630). He also executed numerous frescoes in Rome during the 1620s: a ceiling in the Palazzo Costaguti (c. 1622); the choir and pendentives in Sant'Andrea della Valle, where he worked in fierce competition with Lanfranco, who painted the dome above Domenichino's pendentives; and the pendentives of San Silvestro al Quirinale (c. 1628) and San Carlo ai Catinari (1628–30).

In spite of his activity in Rome, Domenichino decided to leave the city in 1631 to take up the most prestigious, and very lucrative, commission in Naples, the decoration of the Cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro of the Naples Cathedral. His Scenes from the Life of San Gennaro occupied him for the rest of his life. He painted four large lunettes, four pendentives, and twelve scenes in the soffits of the arches, all in fresco, plus three large altarpieces in oil on copper. He died, perhaps by poison at the hands of the jealous Cabal of Naples, before completing the fourth altarpiece or the cupola, which was subsequently frescoed by Lanfranco.
The Sacrifice of Isaac, 1627–28

At the time of his death, Domenichino's chief assistant was an obscure painter from Assisi, Francesco Raspantino, who inherited his master's studio. Earlier, Domenichino's principal pupils were Alessandro Fortuna, Giovanni Battista Ruggieri, Antonio Alberti called Barbalonga, Francesco Cozza, Andrea Camassei, and Giovanni Angelo Canini. Others who studied in his studio include Poussin, Pietro Testa, and his future biographer, Giovanni Pietro Bellori.

Follower of DOMENICO ZAMPIERI, "DOMENICHINO" (Bologna, 1581-Naples, 1641), 18th century. "St. Jerome", based on "The Viaticum of St. Jerome" by Domenichino (Vatican Museums). Oil on vellum. Measurements: 10 x 8 cm; 25 x 23 x 4 x 4 cm (frame). The painter in question is clearly inspired by "The Viaticum of St. Jerome" by Domenico Zampieri (Domenichino). The author, faithful follower of the Bolognese master, takes in particular the bust of the old nonagenarian man, with a thick gray beard and tired eyes looking towards heaven in his last supplication to God, as he was represented in the Viaticum. Domenichino's oil painting, painted around 1611 and preserved in the Vatican Museums, narrated the episode in which the saint, knowing he was at the end of his life, wished to receive communion for the last time surrounded by his disciples and Saint Paula. Domenichino, in turn, had been inspired by a picture of the same subject painted years earlier by Agostino Carracci, whose disciple he was. St. Jerome, both in the Bolognese original and in the painting we show, moves us with the rapture conveyed by his half-open lips, his parchment-like skin and his gaze (in which we can barely see the whites of his eyes, for it is an ecstatic gaze). The birth of the shoulders and chest also manage to convey the emotional cadence of the moment, showing the fragility of a body that fades, but at the same time shines with a light that comes from the soul.

The early inscription 'Carlo' on the backing paper may refer to Carlo Maratta (1625-1713) as a previous owner of this drawing. Fellow artist Maratta famously owned a substantial collection of Domenichino's drawings, purchased from that artist's pupil Francesco Raspantini. In turn, Maratta sold part of his collection, mainly drawings and cartoons, to Giovanni Francesco Albani, later Pope Clement XI, who tried to prevent their sale abroad. They were eventually acquired from Alessandro Albani by King George III of England and reside today in the collection at Windsor Castle.

School of RAFAEL SANZIO (Urbino, 1483 - Rome, 1520), late 16th century-early 17th century. "Mercury" and "Venus". Pair of drawings in sanguine on paper based on the frescoes on the pendentives of the Loggia di Psiche. With later inscription "Domenichino". Provenance: Della Vacche family in Rome. They were part of a large collection of antique drawings with many of the most famous Italian and European masters. Acquired from a member of the family. Measurements: 28,5 x 23,5 cm (drawings); 40,5 x 29,5 cm (frames). These drawings are based on the frescoes on the pendentives of the Loggia of Psyche, a room on the first floor of the Villa Farnesina in Rome famous for the cycle of frescoes by Raphael and his assistants. They are powerful anatomies, perfectly studied to be seen from a low point of view ("di sotto in sú"), which in the final works manifests itself in the form of effective foreshortenings. The agile figure of Mercury, wearing winged sandals and carrying his caduceus, seems to rise before our eyes, with the drapery billowing around his stocky Greek forms. On the other hand, the beauty and the canon of Venus are of Raphaelesque roots. Raphael of Sanzio (Urbino, 1483 - Rome, 1520), was and is one of the most respected and recognized painters in the history of art. Noted for his classicism and the use of a mathematical perspective, he managed to adapt the two dimensions of the canvas to a more realistic conception of the representation of a three-dimensional world. Vasari tells in his famous lives, that Raphael eventually had a workshop of fifty pupils and assistants, many of whom later became important artists in their own right, a characteristic that brought great recognition to his work, and in turn a strong influence of his artistic conception. This was arguably the largest workshop team assembled under a single painter. Among them were established masters from other parts of Italy, probably working with their own teams.

      Est: €30,000 - €40,000

DOMENICHINO, Domenico Zampieri (Bologna, 1581 - Naples, 1641), attributed. "Mercury" and "Venus", ca. 1620. Pair of drawings in sanguine on paper. They could be preparatory drawings for the frescoes of the Church of San Carlo ai Catinari in Rome, whose theme is mythological. Sketches for pendentives. One of them signed. Provenance: Della Vacche family in Rome. They were part of a large collection of antique drawings with many of the most famous Italian and European masters. Acquired from a member of the family. Size: 28,5 x 23,5 cm (drawings); 40,5 x 29,5 cm (frames). Domenichino was one of the most sought-after and prestigious painters of the Carracci family. His drawing skills were prodigious, which earned him important commissions. This pair of drawings in sanguine is representative of his ability to construct bodies on paper as if they were sculptures, with which he established the renaissance of the "beautiful Roman-Bolognese ideal". They were sketches for paintings that were to cover the pendentives of the domes of Roman churches. Numerous studies on paper by the author are preserved for architectural pendentives, such as the allegories of Justice and Prudence for San Carlo ai Catinari in Rome. In the Prado Museum there are also several preparatory drawings for Roman frescoes. In this pair of drawings, depicting Mercury (the Greek Hermes) and Venus (Aphrodite), the modeling of the anatomies reveal the mastery of this outstanding exponent of Baroque classicism inherited from Annibale Carraci, but developed with his own inventiveness. They are powerful anatomies, perfectly studied to be seen from a low point of view ("di sotto in sú"), which in the final works (as seen in the frescoes of San Andrea della Valle) manifests itself in the form of effective foreshortenings. The agile figure of Mercury, wearing winged sandals and carrying his caduceus, seems to rise before our eyes, with the drapery billowing around his stocky Greek forms. The beauty and the canon of Venus, on the other hand, are of Raphaelesque roots. Domenichino began his pictorial training in Bologna: in the workshop of the Flemish Denis Calvaert, but around 1595 he entered the Accademia degli Incamminati, of the Carracci, together with Francesco Albani and Guido Reni. In 1602, he went to Rome as assistant to Annibale Carracci on the frescoes in the Gallery of the Farnese Palace and in the Herrera Chapel of the church of Santiago de los Españoles. It is the style of Annibale's Roman years that is transparent in the work of Domenichino, who better than any other of his pupils knows how to capture the serene classicism and the grandeur of his master's compositions. His independent youthful works begin with the frescoes of the Villa Belvedere, in Frascati, from 1606 to 1608, and those of the Abbey of Grottaferrata, 1608-1610, culminating in his most notable work, the frescoes with 'Stories of Saint Cecilia' in the Roman church of San Luigi dei Francesi, which he completed in 1616 and which, together with the 'Communion of Saint Jerome' of 1614, now in the Vatican Pinacoteca, definitively established the artist's fame in Rome. In 1617 Domenichino returned to Bologna until 1621, when Pope Gregory XV Ludovisi called him back to Rome, on the advice of the Bolognese Monsignor Agucchi, a famous theorist of classicism. From the 1620s are the frescoes on the pendentives of the dome of Sant'Andrea della Valle, where the classicist conception of his painting reached its peak, from which in the following years he moved away to adapt to the more exuberant and decorative innovations of Lanfranco, as reflected in the frescoes of the chapel of the Treasury of the Cathedral of Naples, where the artist had arrived in 1631. Domenichino started from the fervent following of the Carracci's teachings on the attentive study of the masters of the past, especially the supreme example of Raphael, without failing to contrast it with the experience of nature. In addition, his commitment was complemented by the theories of the classical ideal in painting that Giovanni Battista Agucchi, in collaboration with Domenichino himself, wrote, and which were fundamental elements for the later elaboration of the Idea, by Giovanni Pietro Bellori.

DOMENICO ZAMPIERI dit IL DOMENICHINO (1581-1641), attribué Persée délivrant Andromède Perseus liberating Andromeda, oil on copper mounted on panel 45,5 x 39 cm We are very grateful to Diane De Grazia suggesting an attribution to Domenichino in a letter dated 12th June 2007 to the previous owner. Born in Bologna, Domenico Zampieri, known by the diminutive Domenichino after his shortness, was an Italian Baroque painter of the Bolognese School of painters. Domenichino's work, developed principally from Raphael's and the Carracci's examples, mirrors the theoretical ideas of his friend Giovanni Battista Agucchi, with whom the painter collaborated on a Treatise on Painting. The portrait of Agucchi in York used to be attributed to Domenichino, but is now thought to be by Annibale Carracci, another friend. It represents what would become known as classic-idealist art, which aims to surpass the imperfections of nature by developing an "Idea of Beauty" (idea del bello) through the study and imitation of the best examples of ancient and Renaissance art. Imitation in this sense is not copying but a creative process inspired by rhetorical theory whereby revered models are not only emulated but surpassed.
