The color planes are roughly painted with some impasto areas. With vigorous brushwork, the artist created a powerful work in the vein of Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s and 1960s. The color surface is soiled something. In the upper part with a few color loss. Bottom left of the screen a small crack (about 1.5 cm), the canvas with a few light dings. The stretcher measures 121 x 144 cm. Patrick Dolan (1926-1980) Patrick Dolan was born in Ireland and moved in the 1950s to London to study at the Architectural Association. This was followed by trips to Italy, Spain and North Africa. Eventually he settled in 1960, like many artists of his generation, in St. Ives, Cornwall down. He was a friend and collaborator of Francis Bacon. He was a member of the Penwith Society of Arts and presented together with the Midland Group in Nottingham from. He also had several solo exhibitions in London and Leeds. Dolan created mainly abstract and semi-abstract paintings in oil.       § Patrick Dolan (Irish, 1926-1980) Untitled oil on canvas h:121 w: 144 cm Provenance: Private collection, Cambridge, bought from the collection of Derek Sorrell, who acquired several paintings by Dolan from Melvin Hardiment, a close friend of Patrick Dolan, some years ago. Other Notes: Irish-born abstract painter, Patrick Dolan, studied at the Architectural Association in London in the 1950s. In the early 1960s, at the suggestion of his friend, Adrian Heath, he moved to St Ives, and was an associate of the artist, Francis Bacon. Dolan was a member of the Penwith Society of Arts from 1975 and exhibited with the Midland Group in Nottingham. He had one man shows at the Pasmore Edwards Gallery, Newlyn, and Queen's Square Gallery, Leeds. In 1995 an exhibition of his works was shown by Belgrave Gallery, London. Dolan is an abstract painter who was born in Ireland, moving to London to study at the Architectural Association (1951-1956). After a period of travelling through Italy, Spain and North Africa, he moved to Cornwall in 1960. Dolan's interest in St Ives was largely due to his friendship with Adrian Heath. He was a member of the Penwith Society of Arts and exhibited with the Midland Group in Nottingham. Dolan had one man shows at the Pasmore Edwards Gallery, Newlyn, and the Queen's Square Gallery, Leeds. In 1962 he shared a show with Anthony Sheils and Alan Wood at Gallery 60 in Chichester, organised by the Rawlinsky Gallery and in 1965 he shared an exhibition with Wood at Queen's Square Gallery, Leeds.
