SAKAI DOITSU (1845-1913) Tenson korin Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Three kakejiku (hanging scrolls) forming a triptych, in ink and colour on silk, in silk mounts, the right scroll depicting gnarled branches of green maple leaves covered with moss in summer; the middle scroll with the scene of Tenson korin, a deity Ninigi no Mikoto arriving from Takamagahara (heaven) to Ashihara no Nakatsukuni, accompanied by a retinue of attendants carrying the 'Three Sacred Treasures' descending on a cloud, Sarutahiko Okami in the left foreground holding a spear and blocking their way, and Ame no Uzume teasing him by showing her breast and asking for his identity; the left scroll with a maple tree trunk with red autumn foliage, the right and left scroll signed Doitsu hitsu with a seal Ugeanshu (Master of the Uge hermitage), the middle signed Uge Doitsu hitsu with a seal Ugeanshu; with a tomobako wood storage box inscribed outside the lid Aoba kaede tenson korin koyo kaede sanpuku tsui (Three scrolls: green maple, tenson korin, autumn foliage maple), inscribed inside the lid Taisho kanoe-saru shunjitsu Sakai Hoitsu kan hei shiki (Examined and certified by Sakai Hoshuku, 1920) with two seals. SAKAI DOITSU (1845-1913) AND AFTER OGATA KORIN (1658-1716) Mount Horai Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century Two outsize kakejiku (hanging scrolls), ink, colours, gold, and gofun (calcified crushed shell gesso) on silk in silk mounts, each with an almost identical view of Mount Horai (the legendary realm of the immortals supposedly located off the coast of China), with cranes, moon, pines, and crashing waves, each with signature at lower left Hokkyo Korin and seals Hoshuku and Korin, one also signed in gold paint to the left of the Korin signature Uge-an Doitsu kore o mosu (Copied by Uge-an Doitsu); with an outer lacquered box containing two fitted wood tomobako storage boxes, one inscribed outside Horai no zu Ogata Korin hitsu ippuku (A Scroll of Horai by Ogata Korin), the reverse with signature Seisei Kiitsu shi, and with a spurious certificate by Sakai Hoshuku attributing one of the scrolls to Ogata Korin, dated spring 1931, the other wood box without inscriptions. The younger son of the painter Yamamoto Sodo, Doitsu studied under Suzuki Kiitsu, the leading pupil of Sakai Hoitsu, founder of the Edo-Rinpa style. Later in life Doitsu styled himself 'Uge-an the Fourth', in allusion to one of Hoitsu's art names.
