Peter Doig Art for Sale and Sold Prices

Painter, b. 1959 -

(b Edinburgh, 1959) Scottish Painter. Peter Doig grew up in Canada and moved to London in 1979 to study at Wimbeldon School of Art and later St. Martin’s School of art where he received his BA in 1983. During this time, his homesickness for Canada became the subject of his paintings. Doig began searching for images to enshrine in oils, often poring over brochures in Canada House and such, to find not the Canada that one can see, but something truer, more direct, more evocative and somehow more accurate. He used his own photographs as well as those he found in brochures and other places as springboards, to add new layers of meaning, layers contained within the oils, within the imaginary, emphatically illusory space of the canvas itself, as well as within the image. This obsession with piecing together memories remains the subject of Doing’s work. In 2002, Doing moved to Trinidad, where he currently works.
