John Doherty (b.1949)Devane's, Dingle, Co. KerryOil on canvas, 107 x 163cmSigned, inscribed and dated (19)'84 versoJohn Doherty’s path to becoming a painter best known for his superb depictions of vernacular Irish architecture was circuitous. True, he was born in the architecturally rich setting of Kilkenny, where his grandmother had a shop on High Street. The other side of the family hailed from Wicklow. He grew up with an appreciation of the built environment and a love of the sea, and went to study architecture at Bolton Street. Then, in a surprise move, he decided to try living in Australia, began exhibiting paintings there, based on the patterns of urban motorway schemes, and was for a time artist in residence at Papua New Guinea’s National College of Art in Port Moresby.Back in Australia, he gradually zeroed in on his core subject matter. He painted buildings and details, including functional harbour apparatus. But Ireland increasingly infiltrated his canvases. On visits home, he photographed sites that captured his interest. These include the rapidly disappearing traditional shop fronts and petrol pumps in provincial towns, agricultural buildings and machinery and, again, the trappings of boating and navigation. He has since moved back to Ireland, and is based in West Cork.Doherty is usually described as a photo-realist, which is fair enough given that he makes images with a lens-like optical quality, and he is immensely skilled, technically. But he is not obsessed with photographic verisimilitude, as many photo-realist painters are or were. It is more a means to an end. In the same sense, Vermeer and Canaletto are photo-realists. Their use of optical devices gives their work a crisp, contemporary quality today. Doherty’s liking for head-on, frontal views and hard, defining light recall the enormously influential photographic work of Bernd and Hilla Becher in their typologies of industrial buildings.Like them, he does not sentimentalise or pictorialise his subject matter but presents it in as direct and factual a way as possible. Even so, he unmistakably has a great, attentive fondness for it - and a liking for anthropomorphic titles. Even with his harbour paintings, however, there is a powerful sense that we are looking at a world that is fading away before our eyes, partly because that is the nature of time and corrosion, and partly because of changes in demographics and technology. Often, he will emphasise the fact that we are viewing a façade by introducing a break in the façade: an open doorway or a side road or an entrance leading deeper into the pictorial space, and into the passing of time.Aidan Dunne 2019

Provenance: Taylor Galleries, Dublin (label verso); Private Collection Exhibited: Important Irish & British Master Prints, Merrion Hotel, November 2008 - Solomon Fine Art, Dublin John Doherty is a photorealist painter but, unlike many photorealists, his interest extends way beyond the dazzling mimetic potential of paint in the hands of a gifted practitioner. Having trained as an architect he went to Australia and became a painter there. Back in Ireland, he focused on the vernacular built landscape - docklands, small towns, rural infrastructure - in a state of decline, seemingly bypassed by history. In doing so he illuminated the value of what is at risk of disappearing but, more, he has made numerous excellent paintings.

Provenance: Fenton Gallery, Cork (label verso); Private Collection Exhibited: Important Irish, British & Master Prints: Merrion Hotel 14th - 16th November 2008 (label verso) Although he is an amazingly good painter, you could be forgiven for not noticing it, because John Doherty's exceptional skill is virtually hidden in the impassive, photo-realist surfaces of his pictures. Over the years he has explored vernacular Irish architecture in often melancholy views of small towns in decline. He has also been consistently drawn to working harbours, where the structures, and the boats, reflect the ceaseless erosive effects of saltwater and time.

Provenance: Taylor Galleries, Dublin (label verso); Solomon Fine Art, Dublin (label verso); De Vere''s, Dublin, 20th April 2009, Lot 50; Private Collection Exhibited: Important Irish & British And Master Prints, Merrion Hotel, Dublin 14th -16th November 2008 John Doherty was born in Kilkenny in 1949. He studied architecture at Bolton Street College of Technology, Dublin from 1968 to 1973 before moving to Sydney for five years where he decided to pursue a career as an artist. Although the subject matter of much of Doherty''s work belongs to the forlorn and crumbling remains of an Ireland that, though familiar, has been consigned to history, his realism is immediately attractive for its apparently benign normality. The abandoned corner shops and bars, the rusting petrol pumps, rotting boats and disused oil drums seem harmless enough, but upon closer inspection they assume a dark humour. Doherty''s images, coupled with the wry wit of their titles, point towards the human stories that exist behind the facades of places and things inhabited and used countless times over the years. Rendered in an incredibly skilled acrylic photo-realism, his paintings make the different country of the past seem both tangible and real. He has exhibited regularly in the Royal Hibernian Academy''s Annual Exhibition and his work is represented in private collections in Ireland, Australia, America and Europe, and included in the public collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Institute of Modern Art, Chicago; the Irish National Stud, AIB Dublin and London; and Artbank, Sydney.

Although the subject matter of much of Doherty's work belongs to the forlorn and crumbling remains of an Ireland that, though familiar, has been consigned to history, his realism is immediately attractive for its apparently benign normality. The abandoned corner shops and bars, the rusting petrol pumps, rotting boats and disused oil drums seem harmless enough, but upon closer inspection they assume a dark humour. Doherty's images, coupled with the wry wit of their titles, point towards the human stories that exist behind the facades of places and things inhabited and used countless times over the years. Rendered in an incredibly skilled acrylic photo-realism, his paintings make the different country of the past seem both tangible and real. He has exhibited regularly in the Royal Hibernian Academy's Annual Exhibition and his work is represented in private collections in Ireland, Australia, America and Europe, and included in the public collections of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Institute of Modern Art, Chicago; the Irish National Stud, AIB Dublin and London; and Artbank, Sydney.

John paints realistic subjects that initially appear normal, but on closer inspection a message is conveyed from a forgotten past. The subject may appear as a nostalgic record in appealing bright sharp colours causing us to reflect on its simple and elegant design. Each subject is distinctly different in tone and mood adding its own personality. The images can be buildings that are crumbling with abandoned petrol pumps, Old Bar windows, lighthouses, a cluster of buoys on a quayside, or boats in various stages of repair or disrepair. The titles given to the work can be the key to unlocking the artist's message. Other titles to the artist's work include, ''Alone Again'' circa 1996, ''I've Got Mine'' circa 2004, ''Sheep's Head Light'', 2005. Exhibited at the Taylor Galleries in 2007, John Doherty executed two versions of ''Loitering at McCarthy's Garage''. This work is the larger of the two, and depicts the petrol pump with excess peeling paint but with lesser puddles of rain. The Garage would appear to be shut and its title ''Loitering'' would suggest the pump remains in one place with no purpose. The forlorn appearance of the building and petrol pumps indicate either abandonment or a lack of attention and upkeep from its owner. On closer inspection, however the accumulated litter inside the garage window indicates human life. Perhaps the colour pink represents nurturing and the message is a reminder to its owner and to us the viewer that if we wish things to remain in good order, they need to be maintained and cared for.

Inscribed by the artist 'For Robert's Collection' Provenance: From the collection of Robert Cahill, General Manager of Ernie's Restaurant, Donnybrook - a gift from the artist Robert Cahill was general manager of Ernie's Restaurant in Donnybrook, having previously served his time at The Royal Hibernian Hotel before moving to The Shelbourne Hotel on Dublin's Stephen's Green. There he was head waiter in the Saddle Room restaurant; where he met and later became great friends with many international personalities including the esteemed actor Peter O'Toole; director John Huston and the writer Leon Uris to name but a few. When well known hotelier Ernie Evans decided to open a restaurant at Mulberry Gardens in Donnybrook in 1984, Ernie Evans was the obvious first choice as front of house for the venue. Ernie had taken a lot of his own collection with him when he left the Towers Hotel, Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry; this included many traditional paintings. To mark the new opening in Donnybrook they decided to acquire some new contemporary work. Ernie and Robert visited The Taylor Galleries in Dublin where they first became familiar with the work the well known Irish photo-realist artist, John Doherty. Their first purchase was a large scale piece entitled Old Dockyard Building, Castletownbere, which greatly reminded Robert of the work of the American realist painter Edward Hopper. Robert never tired of this piece and continued to get great joy from it for many years. Over the years Ernie continued to purchase many more works by Doherty for the restaurant. This piece entitled Red Barn, Ardfert was a gift from Doherty to Robert Cahill.
