KURT SCHWITTERS (1887-1948) & THEO VAN DOESBURG (1883-1931) KLEINE DADA SOIRÉE. 1922. 11 3/4x11 3/4 inches, 30x30 cm. Condition A-: minor creasing in corners; small tear at left edge; errant pencil notation in lower left; horizontal fold. Paper. Late in 1922, Schwitters and van Doesburg planned a small tour around the Netherlands with a traveling Dada show in order to introduce local artists to their work. The initial evening had been scheduled for December 27, but Schwitters had problems with his passport and the first show was delayed until January 10. In all, there were 17 separate performances in 8 different locations. The first event was held at the Haagsche Kunstkring in The Hague. The address of the venue is included in the poster's upper right corner ("Haagsche K.K. Binnenhof 8"). For subsequent performances in other locations, the poster was slightly changed; this address was removed and a small plug for van Doesburg's Dada magazine, Mécano, was added that read, "Abonnement Mécano F5 per Jaar." Otherwise, the two versions of the poster are identical. The poster has the event program and Dada slogans presented in sophisticated disorder, using different hand drawn typography and varying font sizes. "The poster's discordant appearance reflects the tenor of many Dada evenings" (moma.org/learn). Modern Poster p. 102 (var), Avant Garde p. 38, Berman p. 38, MoMA 178.1945 (var).

THEO VAN DOESBURG and KURT SCHWITTERS Kleine Dada Soirée

          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

THEO VAN DOESBURG and KURT SCHWITTERS Kleine Dada Soirée. Color lithograph printed in black and red, 1922. 298x298 mm; 11 3/4x11 3/4 inches (sheet), full margins. Created for the Dada tour of the Netherlands, January 10-February 14, 1923. A very good impression of this important lithograph with strong colors. In 1923, Schwitters (1887-1948) and van Doesburg (1883-1931) embarked on their "Dada Campaign", a tour of Holland in order to introduce Dada to fellow artists. This poster promoted their evenings of lectures and performances as a "Kleine Dada Soirée," or Small Dada Evening. Van Doesburg is known for being a founder of De Stijl, a movement that promoted a formal vocabulary defined by straight lines and primary colors to seek order. Schwitters, a Dadaist, believed in creating confusion and destroying concepts of reality. Despite the divergent beliefs (and reactions to Post-World War I Europe), when the artists met in 1921, they became close friends and collaborators often working together to merge fine art and graphic design by developing new forms of typography.

          Est: €2,800 - €3,600

Kleine Dada Soirée Colour lithography, 30 x 30 cm (2 inv. folds). Small loss of paper in the lower right corner (3 x 5 mm in the red upside down ‘D’). In 1923 Schwitters and the Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg embarked on a tour of Holland to introduce Dada to local artists and the public through lectures and performances. Van Doesburg's pamphlet Wat is Dada was for sale at the close of each stop. The poster for the Small Dada Evening includes the event program, which lists ragtime music by the composer Erik Satie, abstract poetry by Schwitters, and Dadasofie by Doesburg. The poster is decorated with multi-lingual slogans including: Dada est contre le futur, Dada est mort, Dada est idiot, vive Dada ! Ref: http://www.moma.org/collection/object.phpobject_id=5533). Rare avant-garde poster produced by two protagonist of Dada, Kurt Schwitters and Theo van Doesburg. Schwitters, painter also active in Constructivism, Surrealism and Modernism, is particularly known for his collages called Merz. Van Doesburg was not only a painter and an architect but also a theoretician and the founder of the international movement and journal De Stijl. He propagated, together with Piet Mondriaan, pure geometrical abstraction in art and architecture as can be seen in the Aubette at Strasbourg, where he collaborated with Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, or in his private house in Meudon. This poster promoted their evenings of lectures and performances as a "Kleine Dada Soirée", or Small Dada Evening. Van Doesburg is known for being a founder of De Stijl, a movement that promoted a formal vocabulary defined by straight lines and primary colors to seek order. Schwitters, a Dadaist, believed in creating confusion and destroying concepts of reality. Despite the divergent beliefs (and reactions to Post-World War I Europe), when the artists met in 1921 they became close friends and collaborators often working together to merge fine art and graphic design by developing new forms of typography.
