      DOELL, LUDWIG

      Est: €55,000 - €60,000

DOELL, LUDWIG 1789 Gotha - 1863 Altenburg Portrait of Amalia Duchess of Saxe-Altenburg, b. Duchess of Wuerttemberg, at the Age of 27 Years (1799-1848). Signed with the monogram lower right. Oil on canvas. 75 x 62 cm. Restored. Empire frame. The sitter was a daughter of Duke Ludwig Frederic of Wuerttemberg and of Princess Henrietta of Nassau-Weilburg. Amalie was a niece of King Frederic I. of Wuerttemberg and of the Russian Empress Maria Feodorowna. 1817, at the age of 18 years, she married Joseph of Saxe-Altenburg (1788-1868), and had three children with him. The young duchess visited 1826 Altenburg together with her husband, so the present painting can be dated on this year. According to the Thüringisches Staatsarchiv Altenburg this painting probably is identical with the one mentioned in the handwritten catalogue of Doell's works under the title 'Die regierende Frau Herzogin von Sachsen-Altenburg'. Provenance: Formerly Castle Marienburg near Hannover (verso inscribed 'Zimmer No. 58, Inv.-No. 125' on old label). - Sotheby's 'Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover', 5 -15 October 2005, cat.-no. 1831. GERMAN DOELL, LUDWIG 1789 Gotha - 1863 Altenburg Porträt Amalia Herzogin von Sachsen-Altenburg, geb. Herzogin von Württemberg, im Alter von 27 Jahren (1799-1848). R. u. monogrammiert. Öl auf Lwd. 75 x 62 cm. Rest. Empirerahmen. Etikett, dort bezeichnet Zimmer No. 58, Inv.-No. 125). - Sotheby's "Works of Art from the Royal House of Hanover, 5.-15. Oktober 2005, Kat.-Nr. 1831.
