    EDWARD SAMUEL DODGE (NEW YORK / VIRGINIA, 1816-1857), ATTRIBUTED, MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN, watercolor, waist-length depiction of a youthful sitter wearing black dress with white collar, gold earrings and brooch, retains note attached verso "By Ed. Samuel Dodge / Va. artist / Dec. 1846". Housed in a 19th century ebonized frame. Circa 1846. 3" x 2 3/8" sight, 7" x 6" OA. Catalogue Note: Edward Samuel Dodge (1816-1857) was the younger brother of the well-known artist, John Wood Dodge (1807-1893). Born in New York, E.S. Dodge later moved south, where he earned respect and recognition for his miniatures painted in Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia.

Harrison of Caroline Co., VA / April 30. 1845", and signed, dated, and inscribed to back by artist which reads, "Painted by Edward S. Dodge, at Richmond Va Apl. 30 1845 - likenefs of Mr C A Harrison of Caroline Co Virginia". Housed in a rose gold frame (not tested) fitted as a brooch and pendant.

Housed in a daguerreotype case. Probably a Richmond, Virginia sitter.

    Edward Samuel Dodge (1815-1857, NY/GA), each watercolor on ivory, the first of an unidentified bearded gentleman in a feigned oval with a gilded metal mat and embossed lower right "E.S. Dodge / Artist" (2.5 x 2 in,) (vertical split to ivory); the second of a young woman with curls and wearing jewelry, identified as "Miss Shug (or Sherrry?) Partin / Charleston / SC" and within a gilt tone metal mat with E.S. Dodge embossed stamp lower right (3 x 2.5 in,), the third of a draped young lady within a decorative gilt metal mat (possibly sitter identified en verso but with faint and illegible pencil inscription), date appears to read 1830 (2.5 x 2 in,); the fourth of a blonde haired little boy identified en verso on paper the son of artist E.S. Dodge with pencil inscription "Eugene Rogers Dodge / Painted by / his father / Edw. S. Dodge / Augusta Ga / June 17, 1850"; within a rectangular gilt metal mat with E.S Dodge embossed stamp (SS 3.25 x 2.25 in,) (with vertical split to ivory). The dated portrait of the draped lady with the illegible inscription bears great resemblance to two miniatures painted by John Wood Dodge (1807-1893), that of Mrs. John Wood Dodge (plate 379) and Mrs. Annie C. Hyde (plate 385) in AMERICAN PORTRAIT MINIATURES IN THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART." Also included in the collection Sixth Plate Daguerreotype in full case, 1850s, the backing behind the image identifying the subject as "Edward Samuel Dodge - Artist " (3.75 x 3.25 in.) (tarnish halo, dark toning, moderate allover spotting; case split); Silver Prize Medal, 48mm, awarded by the South Carolina Institute, the obverse depicts an industrial loom, a plow and an anvil while the reverse is engraved "To E. S. Dodge for a Minature (sic) on Ivory 1851" (pierced for suspension; numerous small dings; little actual wear; iridescent toning to the peripheral devices). Additional information available upon request. Frames DOA 7.5 x 6.5 in, Edward Samuel Dodge (1816-1857) was younger brother to the well-known portrait miniature artist, John Wood Dodge (1807-1893). Though "his brother's influence can be seen in his technique, he was greatly influenced by photography, and his mature work tends toward realism," as is evidenced in this collection of miniatures. Born in New York, E.S. Dodge later moved south, where he earned respect and recognition for his miniatures painted in Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia. It was while living and working in Richmond, VA in 1848 that his son, Eugene (a sitter in this lot) was born. E.S. Dodge is listed in "The New York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America, 1564-1860" by George C. Grace and David H. Wallace and "Who Was Who in American Art: Four Hundred Years of Artists In America." Reference: Barratt, Carrie Rebora and Lori Zabor, AMERICAN PORTRAIT MINIATURES IN THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2010. Acquired from the estate of the artist's great granddaughter, Mary Anthony Dodge (1902-1997) of Nash County, NC. Mary's father, Edward Simpson Dodge (1871-1944) was the son of the sitter, Eugene Dodge (1846-1929), the artist's son. Listed in the 1930 census as in the household of her father, Mary lived there until her death in 1997.
