  • Ignatia Djanghara - Wandjina, c.1985
    Mar. 05, 2024

    Ignatia Djanghara - Wandjina, c.1985

    Est: $8,000 - $12,000

This bark painting is created by Ignatia Djanghara. Little if anything is known about Ignatia’s childhood and youth. She was born around 1930 and was already in her mid 50s when she first became prominent at Kalumburu in the mid 1980s where she lived adjacent to the Benedictine mission (Est.1907). Both here and at Mowanjum (the site of a former Presbyterian mission), local authorities had exercised strong control over the Woonambal landowners who were taught that their tribal customs and beliefs were at odds with Christianity. Ignatia and her husband were responsible for maintaining the remnants of these spirit ancestors which are said to have lain down in caves and turned into paintings on the cave walls after their time on the earth. Images of the Wandjina were viewed by artists such as Ignatia as purely reproductions of the ‘real’ Wandjina’s adorning the cave walls at their most important Dreaming sites.

  • Wandjina
    Nov. 16, 2017

    Wandjina

    Est: $1,500 - $2,000

The Wandjina, are exclusive to areas of the Kimberley in Western Australia and are said to exercise power over the rains. For custodians, such as members of the Djanghara and Karedada families, portable images of the Wandjina are viewed as purely reproductions of the ÔrealÕ spirits adorning the cave walls at their most important Dreaming sites. Wandjina images on bark, board, canvas, slate or paper were first produced for trade and exchange with missionaries travelling by lugger along the Kimberley coastline prior to mid 1970s. However the primary artistic inspiration and purpose in creating these works lay in the artist's responsibility for maintaining the ancestral sites, and repainting them to Ôkeep them strongÕ.

  • Ignatia - Wandjina Aboriginal Bark Painting
    Jun. 13, 2015

Ignatia - Wandjina Aboriginal Bark Painting

    Est: $500 - $800

Ignatia - Wandjina Aboriginal Bark Painting. Ochre on bark. Measures 40 x 21 cm. In very good condition. Signed on the back "Ignatia" refering to Ignatia Djanghara who was a well-known Aboriginal female artist born near to 1930. She has since passed away. She was a Woonambool elder and was in her mid 50’s when she first began creating bark paintings related to the Wandjina. She and her husband Waigan were responsible for maintaining the remnants of these spirit ancestors which are said to have lain down in caves and turned into paintings on the cave walls after their time on the earth. Her primary artistic purpose lay in her responsibility to maintain these ancestral beings, by repainting them and ‘keeping them strong’. Ignatia’s images of Wandinas on bark are typically icon-like in shape, with rounded sides, narrower at the top than the base, as present in this example of her work. Information from AIAM.
