James (1887) Dixon Sold at Auction Prices

Painter

The Irish artist and primitive landscape painter James Dixon was born on Tory Island, County Donegal, and aside from the occasional visit to the mainland, remained on the island all his life. He devoted himself to fishing and small farming. He only started painting at the age of 72, after seeing a painter - Derek Hill - at work on a landscape painting. Hill encouraged Dixon and provided him with oils and other art materials, although Dixon made his own paintbrushes from donkey's hair. In due course it was Hill who introduced Dixon's artworks to the art world, thus helping Dixon to become an important figure in the history of twentieth-century Irish painting.

James Dixon (1887 -1970) Wild Goose Oil on paper, 40 x 49cm Signed, dated and inscribed 'Mr Wallace Clark arriving to Tory Island to see some of his friends. By James Dixon 9.5.65' Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist and hence by descent Wallace Clark (1926-2011) was an accomplished yachtsman, writer and author of the classic maritime volume, Sailing Round Ireland. Clark circumnavigated Ireland, and all her islands, for the first time in 1951 and again in 1954. These voyages ultimately inspired him to write his classic sailing log. On these explorations he bonded with islanders and fisherfolk who shared his instinct for negotiating difficult waters. He met James Dixon on Tory Island in the early 1950s while sailing on his 36ft Bermudan yawl, ‘Wild Goose’. Dixon was the most significant member of the Tory Island school of primitive art. The two remained close friends until the artists death in 1970. Dixon and Clark both shared a passion for the sea. Dixon painted what he saw around him in his distinctive detailed, naturalistic style: boats, the wild seas, and the islands. Clark sought to capture the same in his writing. Clark wrote “The islands of Ireland lie round her shoreline like water drops fallen from the head of a swimmer and like water drops they glisten in many colours”. In Wild Goose, Dixon has depicted Clark at the bow of his yawl, sheltered by Tory Island, with a group of well wishers standing quayside awaiting stories of his travels. A similarly titled work by Dixon is part of the National Galleries of Scotland collection. Clark’s many sailing expeditions included a re-creation of St Colmcille’s sea voyage from Derry to Iona off Scotland 1,400 years earlier. After his precarious crossing in a curragh, St Colmcille founded an abbey on Iona, a base for Celtic Christianity in the Scottish pagan kingdoms. Clark’s endeavour garnered considerable interest in 1961 and was widely reported. Both Dixon and Letitia Hamilton were inspired to paint Clark’s voyage to Iona. Hamilton, part of Clark’s artistic circle of friends, painted her tribute to the voyage in the year before her death, despite her failing eyesight, and gifted it to Clark. (lot 12) Dixon’s two paintings of the voyage pay homage not only to Clark and his crew, but to St Colmcille and his legacy.

After meeting the artist Derek Hill, he started painting in the late 1950s. Dixon’s images of Tory, although influenced by Hill’s practice, seem to convey an honest, engaged representation of the island. Unlike other artists of the time depicting island life, Dixon was a native islander who had spent his entire life in its environment. In Cutty Sark, Dixon has depicted a British clipper ship set against an expanse of blue sea. Dixon has faithfully rendered the elegant design of the ship with its refined hull shape, raked masts and large sail area. As with other works by Dixon he has flattened the perspective, and instead of distance horizon line, the sky and sea meet, dark grey clouds rising from the surface. He uses quick brushstrokes applied in varying directions to suggest the ocean swell, adding flecks of white paint as the waves crest and break. The ship looks small against its surroundings, the rough waves crashing off the bow as it glides through the water. There is a small section of the canvas in the bottom right-hand corner that Dixon has left unpainted, instead inscribing 'Cutty Sark, the famous British Windjammer'. James Dixon was born on Tory Island, Co. Donegal, the most remote of all Ireland’s off shore islands. Apart from an occasional visit to the mainland and one short period in the west of Ireland as a fishing instructor, Dixon spent most of his life there and was one of the most significant members of the highly regarded Tory Island school of primitive art. Dixon and other islanders painted what they saw around them in a distinctive detailed, naturalistic style: boats, the wild seas, the island and the small villages grandly named East Town and West Town. The artist Derek Hill organised exhibitions of the work of the Tory school painters, the first of which took place at the New Gallery, Belfast in 1966, with subsequent exhibitions in Dublin, Vienna and London. In 1990 a retrospective exhibition was held at the Glebe Gallery, Co. Donegal, and the Boole Library, University College Cork. James Dixon along with Alfred Wallis was also the subject of a major exhibition in 1999 that opened in IMMA before travelling to Tate St. Ives. Dixon's work is included in the collections of The Ulster Museum, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, The Hugh Lane Gallery, Bournemouth Art Gallery as well as being well represented at Derek Hill’s Glebe House and Gallery in Churchill, Co. Donegal. Our thanks to Ro?isi?n Kennedy whose writings formed the basis of this catalogue note

He took up painting in the late 1950s having met the artist Derek Hill (1916-2000) when he visited the island. Dixon’s images of Tory, although influenced by Hill’s practice, seem to convey an honest, engaged representation of the island. This is attributed to the fact that the artist was a native islander who spent his entire life in its environment. Also as seen in Giant Muldoon at the West End Village, Tory Island, (1967) the flattened perspective, crowded composition and expressive use of colour indicate a childlike sense of his surroundings. The guileless qualities of the work convey the uncomplicated nature of the island, thereby fulfilling the cosmopolitan view of the rural as pure and simple. In reality, of course, Dixon’s work is much more sophisticated than this suggests and life on Tory is equally more complicated. What is significant is that the expressive qualities of such outsider art were highly prized and were emulated by more conventional professional artists. JAMES DIXON (1887 Tory Island 1970) Fishing from the Rocks on Tory Island. 18 October 1964. Oil on paper. Titled, signed and dated upper right: Fishing from the Rocks on Tory Island by James Dixon 18.10.1964. 56 x 37 cm Provenance: Private collection, Switzerland, bought in a gallery in London 1966/67. The artist, seaman and fisherman James Dixon came from a small, isolated island in the North Atlantic named Tory Island. Born as half native islander and half Irish mainlander, he spent his entire life on the island as one of nearly 150 permanent residents. Dixon came into contact with art through the artist Derek Hill, who arrived on the island as a visitor and with whom a deep friendship developed over time. James Dixon only began to dedicate himself to his artistic practice at an advanced age, a fact which makes his paintings all the more interesting. Dixon’s works reflect his life on Tory Island – the everyday life as an islander and fisherman. The ocean, the raging waves and the imposing cliffs play a central role in his paintings. His works are often infused with a narrative humour and an abstract naiveté, as seen in the present work, which shows fishermen fishing on a cliff. His play of various perspectives and his unique application of the paint (he used brushes made from the hair of his donkey's tail) provide an insight into the reason Dixon's art also extends beyond the borders of Tory Island. --------------- JAMES DIXON (1887 Tory Island 1970) Fishing from the Rocks on Tory Island. 18. Oktober 1964. Öl auf Papier. Oben rechts betitelt, signiert und datiert: Fishing from the Rocks on Tory Island by James Dixon 18.10.1964. 56 x 37 cm Provenienz: Privatbesitz Schweiz, 1966/67 in einer Galerie in London gekauft.

James Dixon (1887 - 1970) West End Village Tory Island Oil on board, 56 x 77cm (22 x 30¼'') Signed, inscribed and dated 1964 A native of Tory Island (Co. Donegal), James Dixon enjoyed a simple life of fishing and farming, and was introduced to painting by Derek Hill in 1959 when he visited the island. A virtually self taught artist who was perhaps excluded from the influence of historical precedents due to the remote nature of his home, Dixon was supplied paints and paper by Hill, but reportedly refused paint brushes as he preferred to make his own from donkey hair. His naive style was appreciated and he had his first solo show at the New Gallery in Belfast, followed by one at the Dawson Gallery in Dublin in 1967, one at the Autodidakt Gallery the following year in Vienna, and another at the Portal Gallery in London. Following his death his work was included in ROSC '80, and a joint show with the St. Ives painter Alfred Wallis (1855-1942) was held at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and at Tate St. Ives (1999-2000). His work is now a part of major collections and can be found in the Ulster Museum, the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, The Arts Council Collection and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh.

James Dixon (1887-1970) MAGGIE THE COWS ARE IN THE CLOVER GO AND DRIVE THEM MAGGIE TO THE OLD RED BARN, TORY ISLAND, 1968 oil on paper signed, dated [16.06.1968] and inscribed lower right h:22  w:29.50 in. Provenance: Purchased from artist through Derek Hill, 1967; Private collection The Irish artist and primitive landscape painter James Dixon was born on Tory Island, County Donegal, and aside from the occasional visit to the mainland, remained on the island all his life. His painting is seen as an excellent example of Outsider Art, and was the subject of a major exhibition at The Irish Museum of Modern Art - Two Painters: Alfred Wallis and James Dixon, IMMA, Dublin, September - November 1999.

        Est: €3,000 - €5,000

James Dixon (1887-1970) ''Mary driving the cattle home, the tide came in too soon and the poor girl got drowned'' Oil on board, 54 x 72.5cm (21_ x 28_'') Signed, dated 19-8-67, inscribed 'Tory Island' with legend Accompanied by a hand written poem relating to the painting thought to be in Dixon's hand Provenance: Bought by the current owner privately, early 1972 Exhibited: ''From Tory Island'' exhibition Paintings in Irish Houses Grange House , Freshford, Co. Kilkenny July 1972 . Literature : ''From Tory Island to a Kilkenny Farm'' by Elgy Gillispie, Irish Times 28th July 1972 illustrated. James Dixon is probably Ireland's only true primitive painter having very rarely ever ventured away from his native Tory Island off the Northwest coast of Donegal. His discovery by the painter Derek Hill is now legend. Observing Mr. Hill painting a landscape of the West End Village on Tory he is said to have remarked ''I think I could do better''. Hill immediately encouraged him by sending him paints. Dixon preferred to work on paper and when offered paint brushes he said he would make his own out of hair from his donkey. Hill organised exhibitions of the work of the Tory painters, the first of which took place at the New Gallery, Belfast in 1966 but following on shortly afterwards he had exhibitions at the Dawson Gallery, Dublin, Autodidaky Gallery, Vienna and the Portal Gallery, London. His work entered the collections of The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, The Hugh Lane Gallery and Bournemouth Art Gallery. His legacy lives on in what is now referred to as the Tory Island School of Painting. Homage was paid to him when in 2000 there was a joint exhibition with that other famous primitive painter Alfred Wallis, organised by the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Gallery, St. Ives, Cornwall This work is very similar to a work in the Arts Council of Ireland collection which was included in the major exhibition ''Into the Light'' last autumn. This work is accompanied by a poem thought to be in Dixon's hand and both it and the painting are based on a poem by Charles Kingsley. Mary was lost to a great wave and legend has it that her voice will haunt the shoreline to the end of time, forever calling her cattle.
