      CAPTAIN ALEXANDER DIXON PAYNE WALKING STICK.

      Capt. Payne (1837-1893) entered William and Mary College in 1853 & was there 3 years. In 1857, he entered the University of Virginia & studied law; he was there one year. In 1861, he was made Lieutenant in the Black Horse Cavalry of Fauquier County, Virginia, which he commanded in 1863 and served with throughout the Civil War. He was captured in 1863, exchanged & promoted to Captain. His horse was shot out from under him in 1864. On April 9, 1865 he saved his regimental colors from capture. After the war he practiced law. In 1880 he nominated General Hancock for President. The walking stick was presented by Colonel Thomas Smith. The 35" cane has a fine silver head with filigree sides, the top engraved "Capt. A. D. Payne / From / Col. Thos. Smith / N.M. 'Cactus'". Colonel Smith (1836-1918), son of Virginia Governor "Extra Billy" Smith, was commissioned as a major in the 36th Virginia Infantry on July 16, 1861. Wounded at Cloyd's Mountain, Virginia, Smith was promoted to full colonel in May 1864. After the Civil War, Smith served as the United States Attorney for New Mexico, then chief justice of New Mexico Territory. A rare & wonderful piece of Confederate Civil War history. Cane head shows minor dimpling but no appreciable damage. Wooden shaft has wear to finish concentrated near the tip. CONDITION: very fine. (02-6262/BF). $1000-1500.

      Lieutenant-Colonel Archibald Charles Henry Douglas-Pennant (1837-1884) and Eleanor Frances Susan Douglas (b.1839), seated on a gold upholstered chair; the former, wearing blue velvet spotted dress with matching sash, white frilled chemise and socks, black patent shoes, his brown hair worn short and parted to the left, he holds a lily stalk between his fingers; the latter, wearing white off-the-shoulder dress edged with lace, the sleeves dressed with blue ribbon bows, white socks and black patent shoes, her brown hair centrally parted and curled in ringlets framing her face, she holds a bouquet of pink roses in her arms. Pencil and watercolour on paper, mounted within rectangular gilt wood frame. Rectangular, 296mm (11 5/8in) high Provenance: Ellison Fine Art
