Innocence signed and dated 2012 (lower right) oil on canvas 48” x 48” (122 cm x 122 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UPRenowned Filipino contemporary artist Abi Dionisio is celebrated for her compelling technique and narrative quality. Her success in both solo and group exhibitions has garnered attention from collectors due to the captivating nature of her work, which seamlessly combines accessibility with deeply resonant narratives. In an interview, Dionisio revealed that her fascination with the works of art luminaries such as Juan Luna, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, and Sir Edward John Poynter began at a young age. Furthermore, she acknowledged the profound influence of National Artist BenCab on her artistic journey. These formidable artistic influences played a pivotal role in shaping Dionisio’s distinctive painterly style, particularly evident in her portrayal of the human form—an integral and defining element within her artistic oeuvre. She notes that her practice is ultimately driven by the emancipatory effect she feels through selfexpression. ““Through it, I am able to express emotions, age, gender, body language and facial expressions. It helps me to compose and create stories…” states Dionisio In this piece, Dionisio contemplates the meaning of innocence through what is arguably the most universal symbol of innocence; childhood. The work features two young girls each with a basket in their possession. The one on the right-hand side is seemingly mesmerized by her receptacle, its contents casting a bright glow on her already pristine dress. Meanwhile, the one figure on the left-hand side is seemingly equally enraptured by her companion’s basket, despite having one of her own. Her dress shares the same glow, yet its radiance pales in comparison given its darker bottom half. Through what we know of Dionisio’s practice, it is not unreasonable to dissect the artist’s work through a narrative lens. Given that, the most visually striking aspect of the work are the dresses. The conscious decision to render one figure in a pristine white dress and another one in a mixture of white and gold may hint towards a not so straightforward approach to the concept of innocence. This is supplemented by the gaze and position of the other girl; one that does not convey envy, but perhaps yearning. One can argue that innocence is uniquely situated among the virtues primarily because it is the only one that cannot be gained, only lost. Perhaps here, Dionisio is not attempting to simply convey the concept of innocence, but to relay its bittersweet and ephemeral nature. (Jed Daya)

          Abi Dionisio (b. 1987)

Abi Dionisio (b. 1987) Direction signed and dated 2018 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 36" (122 cm x 91 cm) EXHIBITED One East Asia Gallery, Travel Light, Singapore, September 25 - October 10, 2018 LITERATURE One East Asia Gallery. Travel Light. Singapore. 2018. Page 12 with a full-color illustration on page 13. Abigail Dionisio explores the multifaceted aspects of motherhood and femininity in this piece titled Direction. A hyperrealist oil painting, this piece depicts a patterned textile with small compasses scattered around and above it. A boat’s mast with its mainsail and headsail hoisted is intact in the topmost corner. One can notice that the boat’s hull is missing, and the textile serves as a fill-in. For Dionisio, the sail represents her precarious journey towards motherhood, with the wrinkled fabric symbolizing the stormy seas or the trials and tribulations she has to endure as a woman and as a mother. But through the tireless support of her husband, Welbart Bartolome, every step of her treacherous journey is on course. Through this piece, Dionisio celebrates a love bound by unwavering commitment in the face of life’s vulnerability. Direction was part of a joint exhibition in 2018 by Dionisio and Bartolome titled Travel Light. In the exhibition notes, One East Asia Gallery writes: “Abigail Dionisio and Welbart use sailboats and hot air balloons in their paintings to represent their voyage to life as a couple. With the boat’s connection to water, it is said to symbolize femininity and motherhood. The hot air balloons, on the other hand, are associated with social elevation, popularity, or fame.” (A.M.)

Abi Dionisio (b. 1987) Through Troubled Water For High Time and Love I

          Est: ₱175,000 - ₱227,500

Abi Dionisio (b. 1987) Through Troubled Water For High Time and Love I signed and dated 2015 (lower right) 36” x 24” (91 cm x 61 cm) In the Philippine Art Awards (PAA) 2015-20126, Abi Dionisio’s diptych titled Through Troubled Water, for High Times and Love won an Award of Merit. Here, she used an embroidered canvas on a painted canvas as an approach to expression, as embroidery is often perceived as a feminine craft. This piece presents the female face, with an illustration of a sailing ship in troubled waters, set against a wrapped object as background. Evocative and skillfully rendered, Dionisio exposes the importance of vulnerability in the process of navigating one’s inner emotional landscape, in its serenity and turbulence, for openness and perspective. Dionisio was an advertising arts major from the Bulacan State University, graduating in 2009. In the same year, she was hailed as the grand prize winner in the painting category of the Art Association of the Philippines Annual Art Competition. She has held various sold-out solo exhibits and participated in successful group shows. Her works are considered engaging, accessible and resonant for its narrative quality.

          Abi Dionisio (b. 1987) - Lighten

Abi Dionisio (b. 1987) Lighten signed and dated 2018 (lower right) oil on canvas Sailboats and hot air balloons are motifs of Abi Dionisio, most recently in a joint-show titled Travel Light with co-conspirator Welbart Bartolome in Singapore in 2018. Dionisio utilized motifs in her fantastical oil paintings to represent their voyage to a shared life as soon-to-be husband and wife. For her, the sea-going vessel, specifically, symbolizes individuality, coexistence, and resiliency on a deep, personal level. A widely known figurative artist, the human form is significant in Dionisio’s art as it enables her to express emotions, age, gender, body language, and facial expressions, and aids her in creating visual narratives. Another theme that holds particular significance in her works is textile that shows either calm or stormy seas. As she combines cloth with seafaring, an individual on a journey is suggested. Lighten, one of her large-scale works exhibited in the said show, features two figures carrying boats and different fabrics—one also holds the paddle and the other holds a ball of light. All these elements suggest the importance of doing one’s part to make the journey easier and lighter. The overall composition all the more celebrates both personal and shared journeys. Abi Dionisio (b. 1987) - The Dance

          Est: ₱180,000 - ₱234,000

Abi Dionisio (b. 1987) The Dance signed and dated 2018 (lower right) oil on canvas Featuring her signature use of hyperrealism, contemporary visual artist Abigail Dionisio explores the themes of movement, physicality, and memory. A highlight of the One East Asia Gallery entitled Travel Light in Singapore, the piece is said to symbolize the artist’s journey towards motherhood and femininity. The piece was done in conjunction with her partner’s own painting in order to represent the shared struggles, challenges, and obstacles they had faced. Dionisio’s use of hyperrealism seemingly plays with her subject’s physical form. The meticulous balance between the lights and shadows that populate her subject matter gives them an agile and airy feel. This goes against the seemingly dense and full-bodied characteristic of the subject’s size and form. Thus, by seemingly defying the normal conventions of weight and form, Dionisio presents us with a metaphysical subject; one that is closely tied to her idea of memory. The patterned textile represents the boundless and often perilous sea, while the striped fabric signifies the hope one must carry throughout the voyage. For Dionisio the true challenge of any important voyage is not the physical objects one takes along, but the emotions that anchor themselves to one’s feet. Though they may seem heavy on the mind, trust and compassion, through tireless cooperation, renders them as light as air. Estimate in USD $3600-$4680
