Date: 1941 Description: During the Second World War, Orscha was captured by German troops on 16 July 1941. The occupiers established a forced ghetto for the Jewish inhabitants of the town and the surrounding area. On 26 and 27 November 1941, 1800 people were murdered by a German commando unit. Surprisingly, Werner Diez's pastels and watercolours rarely tell of the war in the East. This sheet is one of the few showing the destruction of war. Signed and dated lower right. Date: 1941 Description: During the Second World War, Orscha was captured by German troops on 16 July 1941. The occupiers established a forced ghetto for the Jewish inhabitants of the town and the surrounding area. On 26 and 27 November 1941, 1800 people were murdered by a German commando unit. Surprisingly, Werner Diez's pastels and watercolours rarely tell of the war in the East. This sheet is one of the few showing the destruction of war. Signed and dated lower right.
