JAVIER BALDEÓN (Cuidad Real, 1960). Untitled, 1986. Mixed media on canvas. Signed, dated and justified on the back. Measurements: 220 x 160 cm. Javier Baldeón studied in Madrid, the city where he lives and works. He began his artistic activity in the field of painting during the first half of the eighties, while still a student, and in 1984 he presented his first individual exhibition at the Fúcares gallery in Almagro. Between 1987 and 1989 he was awarded a grant to live at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid. During those years he matured his artistic language, starting from the negation of representation in painting: in series such as the so-called "56 blows" he presented broken paintings in an attempt to make the painting something real. At the end of the eighties he introduced in his paintings a peculiar mode of representation by means of shadows with large enamelled and luminous planes in which recognisable forms are insinuated. At the beginning of the 1990s he began to work on various photographic works, mixing his pictorial and photographic practice indistinctly. In the second half of the decade, as a result of this relationship between photography and painting, Baldeón returned to paintings with enamelled surfaces based on photographic works in which he explores the tension between photographic reality and abstraction in painting.
