CARLOS DÍAZ "CARLES" Algaida, Mallorca. Almendros azules, 2014 Firmado.

Arthur Beecher Carles American, 1882-1952 Venetian Gondolas, circa 1909

          Est: $30,000 - $50,000

Arthur Beecher Carles American, 1882-1952 Venetian Gondolas, circa 1909 Oil on canvas 25 x 24 1/8 inches Provenance: Acquired directly from Mercedes Matter, daughter of the artist Private collection, Washington, D.C. Exhibited: New York, Hollis Taggart Galleries, The Orchestration of Color: The Paintings of Arthur B. Carles, February 10-March 18, 2000, no. 15 The Philadelphia-born Arthur Carles studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine arts between 1900 and 1907. Among his instructors were Thomas Anshutz, Hugh Breckenridge, Henry McCarter, Cecilia Beaux, and William Merritt Chase, artists whose own work was informed by French painting. The recipient of the William Emlen Cresson Traveling Scholarship, Carles made two trips to Europe, first traveling to London, Paris, and Madrid. In Paris for a second, extended visit from 1907 to 1910, he immersed himself in Parisian art and culture and became closely associated with other young American painters there who shared his interest in more advanced forms of expression. Among them were Eduard Steichen, John Marin, Alfred Maurer, and Arthur Dove, Max Weber and D. Putnam Brinley, a group that exhibited together as the New Society of American Artists in Paris. In the first years of the twentieth century Paris was a hotbed of artistic innovation and experimentation. The young Americans working there were exposed to the saturated color of Henri Matisse and Paul Cezanne, the fractured cubistic forms of French Modernism, avant-garde musical composition and Symbolist literature. They experimented with expressive color, fragmented form, and avant-garde aesthetic theory, forsaking more traditional approaches to painting. Commissioned by Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Philadelphia to paint a copy of Raphael's Transfiguration in the Vatican, Carles traveled to Rome in July of 1909. It is likely that Venetian Gondolas was executed in the course of this Italian sojourn. The hauntingly evocative composition is closely related to another, smaller Venetian work, Nocturne, Venice, circa 1909 (7 « x 9 3/8 inches), in the permanent collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution. Steichen, Carles' closest friend in France, also favored nocturnal themes, both artists influenced by James Abbott McNeill Whistler's own explorations of the subject. In palette as well as in its romantic, murky luminescence - the pervasive blue-green atmosphere interrupted only by the radiance of golden lanterns - Venetian Gondolas parallels Steichen's work of the period. In 1910 - a date exactly coincident with that of the present painting - Charles Caffin wrote a Symbolist-infused tribute to Steichen's nocturnal subjects for Camera Work. The statement could as easily apply to Carles: "It is in the penumbra, between the clear visibility of things and their total extinction in darkness, when the concreteness of vision becomes merged in half-realized, half-baffled vision, that spirit seems to disengage itself from matter and to envelope it with a mystery of soul-suggestion." [Charles H. Caffin, "The Art of Eduard J. Steichen," Camera Work, April, 1910, no. 30, p. 34] A fragmentary, abstracted view at close range of intersecting prows and golden lanterns floating in a haze of lavender and blue, Venetian Gondolas is at once a compelling modernist statement and an ode to the "Queen of the Adriatic."
