        Attributed To Agnolo di Polo dei Vetri 1470-1528 Terra Cotta Bust Of Saint Luke. St. Luke, also called Saint Luke the Evangelist, (flourished 1st century ce; feast day October 18), in Christian tradition, the author of the Gospel According to Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, a companion of St. Paul the Apostle, and the most literary of the New Testament writers. St. Luke is believed to be the author of the Gospel that bears his name as well as of the Acts of the Apostles. According to Eusebius, he was probably born in Antioch , Syria of a prosperous Greek family and was trained as a physician. Measure 15.5" X 13.5" X 6". This, and many lots forthcoming were found at the massive central Florida estate of a true antiquarian who amassed his magnificent collection over a lifetime spent in global travel. Il a été reconnu par l'expert Alfredo Bellandi comme une œuvre d'Agnolo di Polo, célèbre artiste florentin, élève de Verrocchio (communication écrite du 31 août 2007). Le visage ascétique aux traits doux et juvéniles correspond à l'image du saint transmise par l'hagiographie et dont la représentation et le culte ont connu une grande diffusion après sa canonisation en 1446 par le pape Eugène IV. Commissionnée sans doute par un représentant de l'ordre de saint Augustin et probablement destinée à la dévotion privée comme le suggèrent ses dimensions, l'œuvre est un remarquable témoignage de la production en terre cuite si réputée des ateliers florentins de la Renaissance. La sculpture présente des affinités stylistiques avec les œuvres de Benedetto Buglioni et Giovanni della Robbia. Ainsi le traitement simplifié des drapés de la tunique du saint, la position de ses pieds, ses mains grandes et longues s'apparentent au 'Saint Roch' de l'autel Spadari à Arezzo, dernière œuvre documentée de l'artiste et influencée par Benedetto Buglioni et Giovanni della Robbia dans l'atelier desquels il a travaillé. Agnolo di Polo a en effet abandonné le style de Verrocchio et s'est familiarisé avec la culture classicisante du début du 'Cinquecento' qui a influencé sa production plus tardive et que nous retrouvons dans cette sculpture des années 1510-1520.
