      Di Gemma, Joseph Paul (American, 1910-2005) Oil Painting. "Portrait of a Lady". Oil on canvas. Signed lower center on spine of book in painting, "Joseph Di Gemma 1932." In good condition, there is a small area of inpainting at the skin by the left collar and left cheek, which was revealed with the use of blacklight, and a 2 inch square patch above her head. Measures 26 inches x 21 inches. Frame measures 34 inches x 29 inches. From the estate of Countess Consuelo Crespi (1928-2010), an American-born Italian countess who served the world of high fashion as a style-setting model and editor of Vogue (magazine) and Vogue Italia. Countess Crespi and her twin sister Gloria Schiff were famous New York fashion models in the 1940s and went on to become international fashion trendsetters and high-society insiders. Countess Crespi married Count Rudolfo Crespi (1924 -1985) in 1948 and they took up residence at the Palazzo Colonna in Rome. The count and countess were great sponsors of cultural life in Italy and the most elegant couple in Rome. Guests at the Crespis' Rome and New York dinner parties included Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Nureyev, Audrey Hepburn, Andy Warhol, the Fendi's, Steve Rubell, Valentino, Balthus, Maria Callas, Doris Duke, Henry Ford, Marcello Mastroianni, Gore Vidal, Cy Twombly, Bobby and Ethel Kennedy and the Shah of Iran and Empress Soraya. From Askart: Joseph Paul Di Gemma was born in New York City, and studied at Pratt Institute and the Art Students League. He has a B.S. in Art Education from New York University, an M.S. from Queens College, and teaches in the High School of Art and Design, part of the New York City school system. He is also an instructor at the Art League of Long Island. The author of "Lumiprinting : a New Graphic Art", di Gemma has numerous engravings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Astor-Lenox Collection, and the Smithsonian Institute.
