Mukul Chandra Dey was a pioneer of drypoint etching in India, who portrayed many of the rich and famous in the early days of his career, was of great importance for the furthering of Indian modern art in the first half of the 20th century. He organized early exhibitions of works by i.a. Rabindranath Tagore and Jamini Roy during his years as principal of the Government School of Arts in Calcutta (1928-1943). SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XII.

(with split to paper at plate mark); and the third an etching on laid paper, monogrammed and dated 1914 in the plate, pencil signed, charming scene with skaters (Image 6 7/8 x 11 5/8 in.; Sheet 9 3/8 x 12.75 in.) Both Dey and Szukalski were members of the Chicago Society of Etchers. The identity of Mr. Leich is yet to be determined.

(4) NOTES Mukul Dey spent some time in London, working under the supervision of Lawrence Binyon at the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. In addition to doing traditional works clearly inspired by Classical Indian Art, a letter from Binyon to the High Commissioner for India written in 1933 indicates that Dey was also very interested in Western Art and spent time studying the works of Holbein and early Italian painters.
