Nathaniel Thayer is likely the American financier and philanthropist. From a Rockland County, NY collection.

    Early marble bust of William Appleton (1786-1862), inscribed on back "DEXTER" (Henry Dexter American 1806-1876). He was an American businessman (trader, ship owner and banker) and politician. From 1851-1855 and 1861-62 he served as U.S. Representative from Mass.. Similar bust in the Boston Athenaeum. The consignors family know as The Boston Crockers are related to the Appletons. Bust 12" Ht., overall on base 6 1/4" x 6 1/4" x 18".
