THREE PIECES OF ART POTTERY BY LOUIS ETIENNE DESMANT (FRANCE, 1844-1902), AND AN INKWELL POSSIBLY BY HIS SON, LUCIEN DESMANT (1875-1929) each piece signed with incised signature under base, or a variant with incised 'Desmant' and 'Suble (Normandy), each piece from a scene of the Bayeux tapestry or a scene after the Tapestry and each of the three with a sang-de-boeuf lustre-style glazed ground, including a stoppered jar, with a portrait of William in oval cartouche, the reverse with a bird, h: 6 in.; an ovoid jar with oval cartouches of a man, the reverse with a bird, h: 6 1/2 in.; and a teardrop shaped vase, with a cartouche enclosing William, and reverse with a mythical animal, h: 8 1/2 in.; the fourth piece, possibly by his son, Lucien, an inkpot with pen rest, also in the Bayeux style, decorated with alternating griffin, birds and scrolling decoration, all reserved on a variegated orange and wine and green lustre ground, w: 3 3/4 in. French ceramist, Louis Etienne Desmant offers us a vase inspired by medieval aesthetics. Two large pavilions with figurative scenes very much in keeping with the Middle Ages are superimposed on the golden background in the manner of mosaics.
