MARCELLIN DESBOUTIN (CERILLY 1823-1902 NICE) MARCELLIN DESBOUTIN (CERILLY 1823-1902 NICE) Study of a left hand (recto); partial study of the crossed legs of a seated figure (verso). pencil, heightened with white, on grey-green paper 14.7 x 10.8 cm A painter, printmaker and writer, Marcellin Gilbert Desboutin was born into a wealthy family. In 1845 he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied with the sculptor Louis-Jules Etex and with the painter Thomas Couture. In 1854 Desboutin and his family settled in Italy, where Desboutin befriended several Italian artists, including Giuseppe de Nittis, Telemaco Signorini and Giovanni Boldini, who painted his portrait. The collapse of his familyâs fortunes in the early 1870s led to a change in Desboutinâs lifestyle. He left Italy in 1871 and was back in Paris by 1873. Desboutin sent paintings and etchings to the Salons, winning prizes in 1879 and 1889, and also took part in the second Impressionist exhibition in 1876. Desboutin was a founder member of the SociÃ©tÃ© Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1890, where he exhibited regularly until his death in 1902. He was a close friend of Edgar Degas, for whom he posed for the painting LâAbsinthe of 1876.

His parents were Barthélémy Desboutin, a bodyguard of Louis XVIII, and Baroness Anne-Sophie de Rochefort-Dalie Farges. He then traveled in Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. In 1857, he acquired a large property near Florence, the Ombrellino, where he led a lavish lifestyle and became friends with Edgar Degas. Desboutin himself posed for Manet, Renoir and Degas. L'Assomoir is an original artwork realized by Marcellin Desboutin in 1886. Original etching on paper before Letter. The artwork is from the cachet "British and Foreign Artists Association". Hand-signed in pencil by the artist on the lower right corner. Mint conditions. Passepartout included. Fresh and beautiful portrait from an original drypoint preserved at the Bibliothéque National Française and representing the portrait of a man. The artwork was realized by the French artist and writer Marcellin Desboutin (Cérilly, 1823 - Nice, 1902). In 1945, he worked at the atelier of the sculptor Louis-Jules Etex at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, he soon attended the painting course of Thomas Couture. He travelled along Britain, Italy, and Luxembourg. In 1857, he inherited a big villa near Florence, where he lived with Edgar Degas and led a luxiourious life. Bildnis des Malers Hubert Robert. Kaltnadelradierung und Heliogravüre sowie Bleistift auf elfenbeinfarbenem Velin. Um 1889. Nicht im IFF, Clement-Janin 48. Wz. Buchstaben MBM. Marcellin Desboutins Porträt des Hubert Robert geht auf das berühmte Bildnis von Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun aus dem Jahr 1788 zurück, das heute im Pariser Louvre verwahrt wird. Die Radierung gehört zu einer Serie von Künstlerporträts, die Desboutin um 1889 im Auftrag von Georges Petit anfertigte. Letztendlich wurde das Projekt jedoch aufgegeben und nur einzelne Abzüge gedruckt. Für die Realisierung des Blattes bediente sich der Künstler einer Mischtechnik aus Heliogravüre und Kaltnadelradierung. Beim vorliegenden Abzug handelt es um einen frühen Probedruck des seltenen Blattes vor den dichten, dunklen Strichlagen, die in einem späteren Stadium hinzugefügt wurden. Das Blatt ist großflächig mit dem Bleistift überarbeitet, es handelt sich demzufolge um ein Unikat. Ganz ausgezeichneter, klarer Frühdruck mit schmalem Rand um die deutlich zeichnende Plattenkante. Geringe Alters- und Gebrauchsspuren, sonst in sehr schöner Erhaltung. Aus der Sammlung Roland de Perthuis, Paris (Lugt 4237). - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
