    Ernst Dertinger (1816 - 1865 ibid.) after Philipp von Foltz (1805 Bingen - 1877 Munich): "Otto der Schütz A Rhenish History in Twelve Adventures", by Gottfried Kinkel, Otto II of Hesse, c. 1846, Steel engraving Technique: Steel engraving on Paper Inscription: Inscribed with the author's name and title "Gottfried Kinkel" at the top and bottom of the image; signed "Ph. Foltz inv. / E. Dertinger sc." below the image in the printing plate. Otto II of Hesse, called Otto the Contactor (*before 1322 - 1366 at Spangenberg Castle), was the son of Landgrave Heinrich II of Hesse and his wife Elisabeth. According to a legend that has been told since the 16th century, Otto, because his older brother Heinrich (who in truth did not exist) was destined to be the heir and he himself the clergyman, left his home and lived unrecognised as an archer at the count's court in Cleves. The material was adapted several times in poetry and music, the best-known adaptation being by Gottfried Kinkel: "Otto der Schütz. Eine rheinische Geschichte in zwölf Abenteuern", from 1846. Dertinger's studio in Stuttgart", named "St. Martin's Church in Brunswick". Date: 19th century Description: View over the Altstadtmarkt Braunschweig, where the imposing façade of the church of St. Martini with its double tower façade can be seen in the left part of the picture. The image still shows the smaller tower between the towers, which was removed at a later date. Numerous figures have gathered in front of the sacred building, it seems to be market day.
