Kálmán Déri (1859-1940) Kálmán Déri grew up in Vienna and completed an apprenticeship at a printing house. From 1876 to 1882 he studied at the Academy of Arts in Vienna, where he attended the classes of Karl Wurzinger (1817-1883) and August Eisenmenger (1830-1907). In 1884 Déri went to Munich, where he worked for Ludwig von Löfftz (1845-1910) and later established his own studio. His early works mainly show biblical and orientalist themes that were deeply inspired by his teachers. Only in the late 1890s he gradually discovered his interest in genre painting, which was initially strongly influenced by his trips to rural Hungarian villages.
