RAYMONDE, 1934 Öl auf Leinwand. 41 x 33,5 cm. Rechts unten signiert. In Louis XV-Stilrahmen mit Textilausschnitt. Beigegeben eine Expertise des Comité André Derain vom 27. September 2021. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg widmete sich Derain einer realistischen Malerei mit schweren, ernsten Farben und klaren gegenständlichen Formen. Ab den 1920er Jahren beschloss er, sich einen Platz in der großen Tradition der französischen Malerei zu suchen. Die Ende der 1920er/ Anfang der 1930er Jahre gemalten Gemälde sind an Camille Jean-Baptiste Corot (1796-1875), Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) und Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) angelehnt und auch das vorliegende Portrait ist in seiner Farbpalette letzterem verpflichtet. Vor unbestimmtem beigem Grund das nach rechts gewandte Brustportrait der Raymonde Knaublich, Derains Modell und Geliebte, die ihm 1939 den gemeinsamen Sohn André-Charlemagne Derain (1939 -1992), genannt Boby, schenkte. André Derain war ein französischer Künstler. Er war neben Henri Matisse (1869-1954) Hauptvertreter des Fauvismus und wird zu den ersten Malern der klassischen Moderne gezählt. Zeitweilig wurde er als führender Kopf der französischen Avantgarde angesehen und stand in engem Kontakt zu den Kubisten Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) und Georges Braque (1882-1963). Provenienz: Björn Prytz (Schwedischer Gesandter in London während des 2. Weltkrieges, Abgeordneter des schwedischen Parlaments). Von dort durch Vererbung an Vorbesitzer. (1880 Chatou bei Paris - 1954 Garches/Seine) Kinder in einer baumbestandenen Landschaft mit Windmühle und drei Fischen in einem Fluss Anfang der 1950er Jahre entstandenes, fröhliches Blatt des bedeutenden Malers und Bildhauers. Derain gehört neben Henri Matisse zu den zentralen Künstlerpersönlichkeiten und Mitbegründern des Fauvismus sowie des Kubismus und allgemein der französischen Avantgarde. Zugleich stand er auch in engem Kontakt mit Pablo Picasso und Georges Braque, mit denen er auch in Paris im Salon des Indépendants ausstellte. Seit 1901 teilte er sich mit dem befreundeten Künstler Maurice de Vlaminck, der sich 1905 ebenfalls den Fauvisten anschloss, ein Atelier in Paris. Schon 1907 schloss der bedeutende Galerist Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler einen Exklusivvertrag mit Derain und 1920 widmete er ihm eine kunsttheoretische Abhandlung, die Derain in die Tradition des Avantgardisten Paul Cézanne stellte. 1910 zeigte Derain seine Werke auch in der "Neuen Künstlervereinigung" in München, 1912 beim "Blauen Reiter", 1913 in der "Armory Show" in New York. Bis in die 1950er Jahre schuf Derain eine große Fülle von Zeichnungen und Gouachen, die spontane Einfälle wiedergeben und meist nicht signiert sind. Nach seinem Tod wurden diese Blätter bei der Sicherung seines künstlerischen Nachlasses mit dem Atelierstempel versehen. Bleistift u. farbige Filzstifte/Papier. André Derain, French 1880-1954 - Nu Debout; charcoal on paper, with atelier stamp lower right, 62 x 36 cm (ARR) Provenance: Winston Graham (1908-2003), the writer of the beloved Poldark novels and thence by descent; private collection, purchased from the above Note: there is an inscribed gallery label attached to the reverse of the frame '561 Derain Nu Debout'. While most known for his key role in the development of Fauvism alongside Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Maurice de Vlaminck (1876-1958), after serving in World War I Derain returned to a more classical style of which his work would remain. This change in style can perhaps be seen as a quest to find a timeless art.
