JUAN DE'PREY (PUERTO-RICAN / AMERICAN 1904-1962) Street Musicians oil on canvas 82 x 61 cm (32 1/4 x 24 in.) framed dimensions: 84.5 x 64 cm (33 1/4 x 25 1/4 in.) signed lower left LOT NOTES Born in Haiti but emigrating to Puerto Rico at a young age, Juan De'Prey lived the life of a young worker until emigrating to New York in 1929. His works were shown at the Whitney Museum in 1940, and were exhibited widely after that date. The founder of an artist's colony in Brooklyn Heights at 44 Hicks Street, De'Prey passed away at the early age of 58. N.B. Condition reports are available upon request. It shows the extracts of three heads, painted in a naive style. The faces are densely crowded on the canvas and appear as stereotyped or mask-like presentations of South American inhabitants. The painting is signed Juan Deprey on the lower left. The original wooden frame is black. The painting is in good condition. One eyebrow of the biggest head shows a restored crack (1.5 cm). The wooden frame shows some material losses. The dimensions are 75.5 x 50.5 cm. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
