While the prints do not have printed titles, the titles were derived from the accompanying descriptive text. According to the text which accompanies this piece and is printed on creamy white paper with gilded edges, this scene is located on the Greenbrier River in West Virginia.         Two (2) Sherman Denton (American, 1856-1937) antique lithographs titled 'Flounder' and 'Flat Fish'. Sheets measure 8 in. x 11 in. Unframed, loose and not glued or mounted. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Condition report is provided as an opinion only and is no guarantee as grading can be subjective. Buyer must view photographs or scans to assist in determining condition and ask further questions if so desired. Our in-house shipping department will gladly pack and ship any item that fits into a 16x16x16 inch or 30x5x24 inch or equivalent or smaller box/folio. LIMITED EDITION, NUMBER 23 OF 500 COPIES To quote the author: ' It is the aim of the present work to represent our native butterflies and moths not as dried and mutilated specimens in cabinet, with pins stuck through them, nor as dissected fragments for scientific classification, but as one sees them in our woods and fields ... The colored plates, or Nature Prints used in the work, are direct transfers from the insects themselves; that is to say, the scales of the wings of the insects are transferred to the paper while the bodies are printed from engravings and afterward colored by hand....'         DESCRIPTION: Sherman F. Denton (District of Columbia, New York, Massachusetts, 1856-1907). Three prints of trout including a brook, brown, and rainbow. All numbered 170 of 950. Signed lower right "Will Behler". In brass frames with tan matte. Sherman F. Denton is known as a wildlife and fish painter and printmaker, creator of chromolithographs, and naturalist. He was retained as an artist for the United States Fish & Wildlife Commission during the late 19th century. In 1895, he created for the Commission, a series of drawings depicting as faithfully as possible, several species of fish found in this country. These beautiful works have been reproduced in limited quantity from original plates. MEASUREMENTS: Prints are 7-1/2" x 11-1/2". Overall with frame 12-1/4" x 16-1/4". CONDITION: Light frame wear. ESTIMATE: $80 - $120
