      Douglas Denniston (Arizona, 1921-2004) abstract oil on canvas painting titled "Composition No. 37," featuring two vertical shaped columns with vertical black lines, painted in colors of mauve, red, white, and blue. Signed in pen on the upper stretcher en verso. Eric Firestone Gallery, Scottsdale and Tucson, AZ paper label, additionally en verso. Housed in a metallic painted wood frame. Sight: 29 3/8" H x 23 5/8" W. Framed: 31 1/8" H x 25 1/4" W. Provenance: Estate of Russell McAdoo, Murfreesboro, TN. Biography: Douglas Denniston studied painting with Raymond Jonson and co-founded the Transcendental Painting Group with Emil Bistrram in 1938. In 1945 he came to New Mexico and became involved in the Santa Fe/Taos Art Movement. His work during this period was mainly abstract. By the 1950s, when he began a teaching position at the University of Arizona, he began working in a more representational style. His work has been exhibited at MOMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Butler Institute of American Art.
