Full of energy and mystery, this work represents the rhythms and realities of everyday life from an industrial point of view. Dennis’s skill as an architect and sculptor is demonstrated here in her three-dimensional construction of a Manhattan roof deck at twilight. Donna Dennis (American, b. 1942) Springfield, Ohio native Donna Dennis was encouraged to pursue art from a young age and went on to attend Carleton College and Art Students League. She instinctively transitioned from painting to sculpting in the late 1960’s while finding inspiration from various artists like Lee Bontecou, Edward Hopper, and Berenice Abbott and second-wave feminism. Her first solo show occurred in 1973 in New York, and she was awarded the Creative Artists Public Service grant in 1975. Gaining international recognition for her architectural installations by the 1980’s, her works can be viewed in the public collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Ludwig Forum fur Internationale Kunst, and Cleveland Art Museum.
