Following the Revolution, he studied for two years at the newly formed State Free Art Studios (GSKhM) with theater designer Georgii Iakulov. He cofounded one of the first Constructivist groups, the Society of Young Artists (OBMOKhU), and participated in its exhibitions in Moscow from 1919 to 1922. During the Civil War period, he cut stencils for the ROSTA studio in Moscow. In the 1920s, his drawings appeared frequently in satirical magazines. He worked as an illustrator for several publishing houses, including Gosizdat and the All-Russian Cooperative-Partnership of Artists (Vsekokhudozhnik). He was one of the founders of the TASS editorial office in Moscow and served as its director from 1941 to 1946, during which time he designed approximately forty posters for the studio. In 1962 he was awarded the title People’s Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.

      DENISOVSKY, N. Futile Attempts, 1944.

      Est: $500 - $750

Tshchetnye potugi [Futile Attempts], a poster by Nikolai Denisovsky (1901-1981, Meritorious Artist of the Russian Federation). Printed at Krasny Proletary Printing Works, Moscow, 1944. 36 x 16.5 cm.The Nazi regime is desperate for more soldiers, and is declaring one mobilization after the other, but it has ran out of human resources. Denisovsky compares the German mobilization drives to an attempt by a buzzard to raise an offspring out of skulls instead of eggs. The poster’s topic is, as usual, prompted by a line from one of Stalin’s speeches. Denisovsky, one of the first graduates of VKhUTEMAS (1919), worked in a variety of genres (portrait, stage design, book illustration, easel graphics, caricature), but considered himself primarily a poster artist. He was the founding member of OBMOKhU (Society of Young Artists, 1919-1922), and one of the founding members of OST (1925-1929), and later still of the Association of Revolutionary Poster Artists (1931-1932). During WWII, he was one of the organizers of TASS Windows, and after the war, worked for Agitplakat, a boutique posters publisher sponsored by the Artists’ Union. A friend of Mayakovsky, he collaborated with the poet on a number of posters and illustrated several of his books.
