JOSÉ DENIS BELGRANO (Málaga, 1844 - 1917). "Majos". Oil on panel. It has an opening in the panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 37 x 21 cm; 51 x 35 cm (frame). Remarkable exponent of the Malaga School of Painting, José Denis Belgrano was the favourite painter of the Malaga bourgeoisie of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, as his costumbrista work reached an excellent mastery. He was a pupil of Bernardo Ferrándiz at the San Telmo Academy of Fine Arts in Malaga and his artistic career is well defined by three stages. The first of these is recognisable by his self-taught training, and it was in 1855 that he enrolled to study in Malaga after a short stay with his relatives in León. There is no information on his possible works from these years, and it was not until 1862 that he was awarded a two-year scholarship to Rome by the Marquis of Guadiaro, a patron and friend of the family, after his qualities had been appreciated. The second stage was his academic training and lasted from 1862 to 1876. During this stay in the Roman capital, while he was studying, he produced a large number of drawings and watercolours, as well as several compositions, one of the most outstanding of which is "La duda de Santo Tomás del Guercino" ("The Doubt of St. Thomas of Guercino"), which is currently in Malaga Cathedral. In 1867 he painted the canvas entitled "Salida de la cuadrilla" ("Exit from the Quadrille"), in which we can already see what was to be his main theme, the costumbrista type. At that time he defined himself, according to the texts of the time, as a "painter of bullfighters and majas". He enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in 1868, under the guidance of the recently appointed professor Bernardo Ferrándiz, in the subject of Composition and Colouring, and was one of its first students. From then on, the third stage of his career was characterised by an evolution in his technique, moving from the loose lines of Sevillian Romanticism to an elaborate and rigorous preciosity. The influence of his master can also be seen in his portraits, which are charged with great personality and psychological study. Denis worked on numerous commissions to portray the local elite. In his pictorial activity he combined the direct capture of life with the costumbrismo of Ferrándiz and the preciosity of Fortuny. The result of this is the genre scenes in which he captures his snapshots of everyday life with a touch of frivolity and picaresque.

Oil on canvas, measures: 87 x 69 cm, 105 x 86 cm framed. José Denis Belgrano (b. Málaga, April 8, 1844 – d. February 12, 1917) was a Spanish painter, a notable exponent of the Málaga school of painting. He was the favorite painter of the Malaga bourgeoisie of the 19th and early 20th centuries. His costumbrista work reaches great mastery. Thanks to the help of Carlos Larios, Marquis of Guadiaro, he was able to travel to Rome in 1862, where he studied for two years and received the decisive influence of the work of Mariano Fortuny, whom he never met. Later, in Malaga, he enrolled in the School of Fine Arts (1868), where he was a student of Bernardo Ferrándiz. In 1875 he returned to Rome where he stayed for two years. On his return to Malaga he is already a renowned painter: he decorates the Palace of Heredia, exhibits his paintings with great success (drawings, watercolors, oil paintings) and has been teaching classes at the School since 1887. He is buried in the San Miguel de Málaga Cemetery. The Museum of Fine Arts in Malaga preserves some of his works. A street and a public education center in Malaga bear their no

JOSÉ DENIS BELGRANO (Malaga, 1844 - 1917). "Altar boy". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower left corner. Period frame. Size: 43,5 x 25 cm; 64 x 45 cm (frame). Denis Belgrano was a great observer of his environment, of the uses and customs, developing both the urban and the rural theme, populated by majas and manolas, or priests and altar boys. This young altar boy is captured in a moment of intimacy, withdrawn into his own thoughts. And to this audacious psychological capture is added the plastic, almost tactile preciosity with which the boy's humble clothing and the interior objects are depicted: the porcelain of the vases, the bronze wall lamp and the clock. A notable exponent of the Malaga school of the second half of the 19th century, much admired and respected in his time and highly valued today, José Denis was born into a bourgeois family and excelled in painting from a very early age. His precocious talent attracted the attention of the Marquis of Guadiaro, Carlos Larios, who granted him a pension which enabled him to continue his studies in Rome between 1862 and 1864. Until then he had been self-taught. During his stays in Rome (he made a second trip in 1875) he became acquainted with the work of Mariano Fortuny, whose influence would from then on be very present in his painting. When Bernardo Ferrándiz returned to Malaga, Denis entered the city's School of Fine Arts as his pupil in 1868. On his return from his second trip to Rome, Denis was already a fully established painter. He then received important commissions such as the decoration of the Heredia Palace, the ceiling of the Liceo Artístico in Malaga and a portrait of the Infanta Mercedes of Orleans, the future wife of Alfonso XII. At the same time he held successful exhibitions of his work, both oil paintings and drawings and watercolours, and in 1887 he joined the teaching staff of the San Telmo School of Fine Arts in Malaga, where he was appointed a member in 1910. He also took part in official exhibitions such as the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid in 1887. Denis was particularly noted for his genre scenes, although he also produced bullfighting and gallant subjects and portraits. Works by Denis are housed in the Malaga Museum of Fine Arts, the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art in Malaga and the Unicaja Collection.
