Round sculpture in bronze with dark patina, representing a philosopher of Antiquity seated on a high pedestal, holding a book in his hands and with his face turned away from the spectator. An important French bronze artist, Jean François created the Maison Denière, which was later joined by his son Guillaume. His works appeared at the Paris World's Fair of 1855. Jean François created many clocks together with Jean François Théodore Gechter (1796-1844). All his watches were awarded for their precision and high quality. Denière received many royal commissions, including the one for the Jardin des Tuileries in 1852 and 1854 and the bronze group "Apollon and his muses" on the top of the Opéra Garnier in Paris.
