Charles Demuth Sold at Auction Prices

Water color painter, Illustrator, b. 1883 - d. 1935

(b Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1883; d Lancaster, Pennsylvania, 1935) American Painter. Charles Henry Demuth became a student at Drexel Institution of Art, Science, and Industry in Philadelphia in 1901 and later studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1905. During the late 1910s and early 1920s, Charles Demuth painted in Provincetown, Bermuda and Lancaster. Beginning with his Bermuda works in 1916, Demuth developed a style, later termed Precisionism, based on depictions of modernization and industrialization following World War I. The influence of Cézanne's watercolors is evident in Demuth's use of the paper in his works from the mid-1910s onward.* In 1922, Charles Demuth's debilitating diabetes compelled the artist to return from New York to live permanently in his childhood home of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.** By the late 1920’s and early 1930's, Demuth dedicated himself chiefly to still life painting, working for nearly six years developing his distinctive watercolor technique. In his later works, the artist often uses the stark white of the paper, or a pale translucent wash, as a forceful element in the painting. Each work is complete (and usually signed and dated by the artist), yet many compositional elements are themselves unfinished. Charles Henry Demuth died, as a result of diabetes, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1935. Exhibition “Charles Demuth: The Later Years,” The Demuth Foundation, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, June 1-September 15, 2001. Lot Essay Demuth first experimented with watercolor while in France and further explored the medium upon his return to the United States in 1914, mainly through flower pieces and figural compositions. Executed in the early 1920s, at the height of Demuth’s mature style, the present work masterfully captures the grace and fragility of a delicate bouquet of irises and sweet peas. At the time, Demuth was heavily influenced by Paul Cézanne, whose work he discovered through his friend Dr. Albert C. Barnes. Like the French Master, Demuth developed a keen attention to line and color, and pushed the boundaries of the picture plane, inventing new perspectives and suggesting unseen forms and spaces.  While Demuth’s earlier pieces denote a certain flat, almost primitive expression, the present work is striking in its crisp, minimalist execution that beautifully captures “the art of the unfinished,” which is so often associated with Demuth's aesthetic. The artist leaves much of the paper untouched; the background is half defined and each flower is only very lightly outlined, yet, the composition is enlivened by the subtle, almost transparent, washes that glow with jewel-like tones. While some fade into one another, others strike with unique intensity, staining the paper like a mosaic, thus creating a surface which is both rich and varied. Through its translucent coloring, subtle linear effects, and soft modeling, Floral Still Life is presented in all its glory. Each flower is subject to its own sensual, organic rhythm as if Demuth’s mission was to capture nature's essence and reveal its underlying structure on the surface of his paper.

Demuth (1883-1935) was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and suffered an injury as a child that forced him to walk with a cane. As he was unable to be as physically active as other children, his mother gave him crayons to draw with. His parents supported his art from a young age and he attended Franklin and Marshall College, Drexel University and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia. After leaving school, he focused on his preferred medium of watercolor and found inspiration in flowers and plants in his mother's garden, a subject that would preoccupy him throughout his life. Demuth made his studio at his home in Lancaster, but traveled frequently and made many important friends in the artistic community. He traveled three times to Paris where he studied at the Académie Colarossi and Académie Julian, joined the avant-garde artistic scene, and admired the work of European modernists, even spending time at Gertrude Stein's salon. He met Marsden Hartley while in Paris who later introduced him to Alfred Stieglitz and became part of his tightknit group of artists. Demuth spent several summers at the artists' colony at Provincetown, Massachusetts, during the mid-1910s and, in 1914, exhibited his watercolors in the Provincetown studio of modernist painter, E. Ambrose Webster.

Provenance: Margaret V. and Samuel A. Lewisohn, New York; thence by descent to current owner, private collection, New York. While well-traveled, most of his work was created in his studio in Lancaster. Demuth eventually embraced a Precisionist style, focusing on geometric forms and industrial subject matter. He also returned to flowers, plants and vegetables consistently throughout his career, focusing with technical virtuosity and deft handling on their color and form.
