Adolf DeMeyer Sold at Auction Prices

Photographer

(b Paris, 1868; d Hollywood, CA, 6 Jan 1949). French photographer. He was brought up in Paris and during the 1890s also became established in London as part of a circle of aristocrats and socialites. In 1899 he married Olga Caracciolo, whose godfather was the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). He soon became noted for his elegant photographic portraits, such as that of his wife Olga de Meyer (c. 1900; Rochester, NY, Int. Mus. Phot.). He had started exhibiting in London and Paris in 1894 and in 1898 was elected to the LINKED RING. This rapid success was due to the influence of Whistler and the Aesthetic Movement in his works: he used diffuse back-lighting and soft focus to give an air of unreality both to his portraits and to his still-lifes (e.g. Still-life with Flowers , Providence, RI Sch. Des., Mus. A.). In 1901 Meyer was made a baron by Frederick-Augustus III, King of Saxony, at the request of his cousin Edward VII.

DE MEYER, BARON ADOLPH (1868-1949) [Marchesa Luisa Casati], circa 1912, printed 1940.

        Est: $10,000 - $15,000

DE MEYER, BARON ADOLPH (1868-1949) [Marchesa Luisa Casati], circa 1912, printed 1940. Gelatin silver print, 14 x 11 inches (355 x 280 mm), printed on recessed sheet, signed in pencil in the margin, the verso with the Kodak enlargement stamp and a pencilled notation "278A." Image in fine condition, no defects noted, minor soiling to the reverse of the sheet. Luisa, Marchesa Casati Stampa di Soncino, was a patron of the arts and a notable beauty of the period, and was the subject of several photographs by De Meyer, of which the present is iconic, in large part because it was published in Camera Work. The present print is one of a group that de Meyer prepared for a 1940 exhibition held at the home of the actor Edward G. Robinson (a noteworthy collector of modern art). Unable to locate vintage examples of many of his images, de Meyer prepared enlargements from his negatives on large sheets of Eastman Kodak paper, hence the Kodak stamp on the verso. The quality of Kodak printing is excellent, and the resulting print is far larger than most of the photographer's vintage work, while preserving its aesthetic qualities. This image was presented as a photogravure in Camera Work Number 40 (October 1912), plate III. See also International Center of Photography De Meyer: A Singular Elegance, p. 59; Knopf De Meyer, p. 37. Provenance: Christie's, Photographs, April 8 1998, lot 248; to Norma and Martin Stevens. DE MEYER, BARON ADOLPH (1868-1949) [Portrait of Rita de Acosta Lydig], about 1900, probably vintage.

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

DE MEYER, BARON ADOLPH (1868-1949) [Portrait of Rita de Acosta Lydig], about 1900, probably vintage. Platinum print (unmounted), 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches (242 x 190 mm), unsigned, annotated in pencil on verso with the name of the subject. Minor wear to the edge of the print, slight fading from old mount tabs at the head, verso with trace of old mounts. Few of De Meyer's images from this period survive, as he destroyed many in a fit of despondency following the death of his wife. Rita Hernandez de Alba de Acosta Stokes Lydig had a coterie that included Degas, Rodin, Tolstoy, Debussy and others. A feminist, she supported the cause of women's suffrage. Other images from this session with de Meyer exist, see for example https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fb/Rita-lydig-pic.jpg. With Robert Klein Galleries. Est: $300 - $500

DE MEYER, BARON ADOLPH (1868-1949) [Windows on the Bosphorus], circa 1911. Vintage platinum print, 3 5/8 x 2 3/4 inches (94 x 72 mm), taken circa 1911. Image in generally fine condition. Hinged to mount and framed. De Meyer's photograph Windows on the Bosphorus was published as a photogravure in Camera Work, XL, 1912 and subsequently appeared in Vanity Fair, May 1915. The present platinum print is a reduced cropping and, judging by differences in the reflections in the water (the facade is identically lit), may indeed come from another plate prepared by De Meyer at roughly the same time. From Anne Horton's note from a silver print of the Camera Work image "This photograph shows de Meyer's 'crumbling old house on the Asiatic side of the Bosphorus.'" C The Collection of Anne Horton

Vintage platinum print on original (?) black paper mount, 8 1/8 x 3 1/2 inches (206 x 88 mm), unsigned and unannotated. Minor toning to the edge of the print A very fine Pictorialist depiction of Olga de Meyer. When she died in about 1931, he destroyed many of his prints while in a fit of deep depression, so vintage de Meyer images are relatively difficult to obtain. De Meyer himself had to borrow his own vintage prints from clients for exhibition in later years. Est: €800 - €1,040

Vintage gelatin silver prints on double-weight paper, toned France, c. 1900 Baron Adolphe de Meyer (1868-1946) – French art collector, painter and important photographer of the early 20th century Both photographs are verso signed in pencil ‘DEMEYER’ Sheet size: 17.8 x 12.3 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection Hamburg, Germany Two charming images of a young dancer; De Meyer's photographs of ballet dancers fetch over 70,000 euros at international auctions Object is regular taxed. Differential taxation is not possible. These two photographs by Baron Adolphe de Meyer were shot around 1900. They depict the same young ballet dancer wearing a gorgeous tutu and posing for the photographer in his studio. De Meyer is primarily known for his portraits of celebrities and fashion photographs but the world of ballet always fascinated him. Thus he portrayed, for instance, the most virtuoso dancers of the early 20th century, Vaslav Nijinsky, in numerous photographs. The two photographs are overall in good condition. The vertical format picture shows a minimal abrasion in raking light. There are retouchings on the negative to the girl’s armpits. The photo is taped to the mat along the upper margin. The second photo shows marginal blemishes, especially on the left edge, where the upper corner is missing and the surface is damaged. The sheet is mounted with photo corners under a mat. The verso of both photos shows traces of previous mounting, they are signed on the verso in pencil ‘DEMEYER’. The dimensions are 17.8 x 12.3 cm. The mounts measure 30 x 24 and 40 x 50 cm respectively. Adolphe de Meyer (1868-1946) Adolphe de Meyer, the son of a Parisian banker, initially took private drawing and painting lessons with Claude Monet. In the following years however, he devoted himself more and more to portrait photography. His early works were published in Alfred Stieglitz’s journal Camera Work. In 1910 he created his first fashion shots for Vogue magazine. De Meyer was a pioneer in the field of fashion photography in New York and became the first staff photographer employed by Vogue and Vanity Fair. Cecil Beaton gave him the nickname ‘the Debussy of photography’. De Meyer has inspired numerous photographers of the next generation such as the ones of Edward Steichen. Today only few of the photographer’s works are preserved for most were destroyed during the Second World War. Some of his photographs are held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as well as the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Est: $2,000 - $3,000

DE MEYER, BARON ADOLPH (1868-1949) Woman with Plumed Hat (Marthe Regnier). Gelatin silver print, 14 x 11 inches (354 x 280 mm), taken circa 1915, printed 1940, signed in pencil in the margin; Eastman Kodak enlargement stamp and title in pencil on the verso. Image and mount in fine condition, archival cloth hinges and a tiny mounted label on verso. The quality of Kodak's printing is excellent, and the resulting print is far larger than most of the photographer's vintage work, while preserving its aesthetic qualities.
