Thomas Cyrill Demand Sold at Auction Prices

Photographer, b. 1964 -

(b Munich, Germany, 1964) German photographer. Thomas Demand began his studies in Germany at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste München, followed by the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He received his masters in fine arts from Goldsmiths College in London in 1994. Like many post-conceptual artists of his generation, his work covers notions of scale, reproduction and representation, linking him to a generation of American artists including Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall and Gregory Crewdson, whose highly directed, photographic tableaux owe more to television and other media than to traditional photography. Demand's work crucially investigates the role of photography and of the media within our image-saturated culture.* In Demand's photographs, we are rarely looking at what we think we see. Every element in his pictures – mostly interiors, though occasionally single objects and natural imagery – is in fact made of paper. Demand began his artistic career as a sculptor, and preferred working with paper because it is inexpensive and portable. He took up photography as an ancillary means to record his constructions before they fell apart, but the tables soon turned, and by 1993 the Berlin-based artist was making paper sculptures for the express purpose of photographing them.** (Credit: *Sotheby’s, London, Contemporary Art Evening, June 21, 2006, lot 65; **Christie’s, New York, The Refco Collection of Contemporary Photographs, May 5, 2006, lot 29)

Demand, inspiriert vom ikonischen, auf dem STERN-Cover millionenfach reproduzierten Tatortphoto, hatte es 2008 sogar selbst mit seinem detailgetreuen Nachbau des Oval Office auf den Titel des New York Time Magazine geschafft. - Tadellos.

Edition Schirmer/Mosel, Munich, 2004. - - Thomas Demand is celebrated for his unique artistic approach, involving the precise creation of life-sized paper and cardboard models that mimic everyday scenes and objects. These models serve as the subjects for his photography, yielding remarkably lifelike images. Demand's art blurs the line between reality and illusion, encouraging contemplation of representation, memory, and perception, particularly in today's digitally manipulable image-driven era, emphasizing the intricate connection between the tangible and the perceived. – In excellent condition. – With: Collector's edition of Eckhard Schneider (ed.). With stand-up display on Depiction Size: Measurements without stand-up display: 25cm. Sheet Size: 21cm. Notation: Signed and dated on enclosed certificate. Publisher: Parkett-Verlag, Zurich (publisher). Number: 1/75. Condition: The multiple is in very good condition. With enclosed certificate. With Parkett magazine. "The last thing Demand wants to do is simulate reality. His pictures have no intention of deceiving viewers; rather, they give them the choice of taking part in the illusion themselves. Illusion is not an act of deception; it is play. In the case of Demand's pictures, it acquires diversity by ceaselessly commuting between the imitation and the construction of reality. You can never quite tell what kind of reality prevails in these pictures: that of the represented or the representation itself or both at once?" Andreas Ruby, Parkett no. 62, 2001. Typewritten notes about the work on a gallery label affixed to the reverse of the mount. Print 5 from an edition of 6 (+ 2 A.P.). A perfectly lit room with a draped camera, a simple chair in front of a white wall, a curtain behind it: Thomas Demand’s photographs depict architecture borrowed from real-life imagery and refer to those political and social events which the artist considers relevant. Demand recreates his rooms as expansive structures out of paper and cardboard and finally photographs them with a large-format camera. He transfers the ephemeral, three-dimensional structure into two dimensions, thus securing it visually before destroying it. Demand draws his inspiration from various sources in the media landscape. In this case, it was an illustration from an article in the weekly magazine ‘Der Spiegel’ about past events in a GDR prison which triggered his artistic engagement (cf. Der Spiegel, 20/1999, pp. 42-44). “One of the subjects I discovered, or let’s say rediscovered, was the story of the photo center in the political prison in Gera. The inmates – all of them political prisoners – were photographed regularly, which is nothing unusual in the prison’s daily routine. Years after the prison was closed, someone noticed that a striking number of the portrayed detainees suffered from leukemia. A subsequent investigation of what might have happened unearthed the fact that the photo center consisted of a camera, a chair, a flash light, and a white wall in the background. Behind the wall, however, was a curtain. And hidden behind the curtain was another photographic device, an X-ray apparatus, which had been used without the optics, i.e. it probably emitted radiation and contaminated the inmates. All this was never actually proved, nobody knows exactly what happened. There are survivors of the prison who are trying to build a case, but it was never really prosecuted, because of course the successor state isn’t interested in investigating the real circumstances, as that could mean the victims might be entitled to a lifelong pension.” (Thomas Demand, in: Thomas Demand und die Nationalgalerie. A Conversation About the Exhibition with Hans Ulrich Obrist, Berlin 2009, Cologne 2009, p. 101f.). Although Demand’s supposed ‘crime scene‘ photography appears familiar to the viewer, it remains intangible and mysterious due to the elimination of details. Only the knowledge of the ‘story behind the picture’ helps the viewer to decipher the respective meaning of the image. The artist reveals his stories (as here in an interview), but does not automatically supply them, such as in the form of a picture caption or an explanatory title. Neither the actual historical event nor the truthfulness of the press photographs he processes are of primary importance to Demand. They are idea-giving triggers and artistic components of his work, which thereby become testimonies of his own reconstructive engagement with known and generally available models. Demand is not a political artist in the strict sense, but an attentive contemporary. Fotoecke/Photobooth is one of about 40 works which Thomas Demand selected for his major exhibition ‘Nationalgalerie’ in Berlin. The works gathered here all bear reference to significant social and historical events in Germany after 1945. They are pictures that are anchored in the collective (German) pictorial memory. In addition to the socio-political dimension described above, formal aspects also always come into play in Demand’s selection of models and their realisation in paper form and photography. In this case, Demand has tried to reproduce accurately the colour palette typical of interiors of the former GDR in the 1980s. A detail that particularly fascinated him on his discovery of the original, and which he modified in the resulting work, is the curtain with its striking floral pattern, which in Demand's own version takes up almost half of the picture surface. “This flowery, baroque décor looks completely out of place in the prison. In West Germany, the whole thing would have looked a lot more serious, and that’s the difference: you can’t think up strange incidents like that. Because then it would be staged setting, which in my case, it’s not.” (Thomas Demand, op.cit., p. 102).

            Demand, Thomas: "Phototrophy"

            Est: €1,600 - €1,800

[[^]] "Phototrophy". 2005. Fine art print. 31 x 36,5 cm. Signed and editioned 2/100 by the photographer in pencil on the verso. Edition Schirmer/Mosel Munich. - - One of the most celebrated contemporary photo artists, Thomas Demand's pictures at first seem like depictions of everyday places. On closer inspection it becomes evident that they are reconstructions of reality: Demand creates life-size environments made of paper and cardboard which are accurate down to the smallest details, then photographs these 're-creations' and destroys them. These pictures underline the drab aesthetics of the modern office world and architecture, but also show depictions of nature. Demand's sculptural simulations, completely devoid of people, lead us into a world of models in which a "faked' reality blends with the memory of "real" reality and as such become a virtual reality. – In excellent condition. – With: Collector's edition of Eckhard Schneider (ed.). Thomas Demand. Phototrophy. English/German edition. 128 pages, 66 color plates. Schirmer/Mosel, Munich 2004. In original grey linen slipcase and grey linen folder for print. - - Sollten Sie detailliertere Zustandsberichte wünschen, kontaktieren Sie uns bitte. / Should you need more detailed condition reports, please contact us.
