      • De L'Isle - Map of Louisiana and the Course of the Mississippi (Eastern America) (First Appearance of the name Texas on a Map) [Carte de la Louisiane et du cours du Mississipi]
        Sep. 28, 2024

De L'Isle - Map of Louisiana and the Course of the Mississippi (Eastern America) (First Appearance of the name Texas on a Map) [Carte de la Louisiane et du cours du Mississipi]

        Est: $10,000 - $15,000

This early map of America was done by Guillaume de l'Isle (Delisle) and entitled "Carte de la Louisiane et du cours du Mississipi." This was published by Guillaume De L'Isle in Paris in 1718. “Geographically, politically, and historically this is one of the most important maps of the Mississippi Valley. Quickly copied, widely referred to, it was the chief authority for the Mississippi River for over fifty years…” (Cumming et al, p. 156) This is the first state of Delisle's map of Louisiana. It is the first map to name Texas. “The most important notation to Texas history [on the map]... was that appearing along the Trinity: ‘Mission de los Tiejas, etablie in 1716.’ This phrase marked the first appearance of a form of the name Texas on a printed map, and thus Delisle has received proper credit for establishing Texas as a geographic place name.” (Martin & Martin) The map is essential to the history of cartography in the United States and one of the most important of North America. It influenced many later maps made by Homann, Moll, Senex, Seutter, and more. "This map is the mother and main source of all the later maps of the Mississippi." (J. G. Kohl) "One of the most important mother maps of the North American continent." (William P. Cumming) It was the first detailed map of the Louisiana Territory and Mississippi River region. This first state of the map was the first map to indicate Texas (Mission de los Teijas established in 1716). "This marked the first appearance of a form of the name Texas on a printed map, so Delisle is credited with establishing Texas as a geographic place name." (Martin & Martin) The map also marks the land routes of explorers including De Soto in 1539 and 1540, Moscoso in 1542, Cavelier in 1687, Tony in 1702, and Denis in 1713. It also also marked two newer settlements founded in 1705 in New Mexico, S. Maria de Grado and S. Phelipe d'Albuquerque, as well as the Natchitoches on the Red River, founded in 1717. The map marked several French and English settlements, locations of mines, ethnographic information, and more. It also alludes to conflict amongst the Native Americans with a stretch along the Texas coast reading "Indiens errands et Antropophages" or "Wandering Indians and Cannibals." The map had political implications as well in offense of the English as the map claimed Carolina was “so named in honor of Charles by the French who discovered it, took possession of it and settled it in the year 15 …” Delisle may have only intended this as a historical note, but New York Governor William Burnet wrote in a letter that “all Carolina is in this New Mapp taken into the French Country and in words there said to belong to them.” (Cumming 21) His earlier maps from 1700-1703 emphasized the holdings of Spain in vast territories of "Floride" and "Nouveau Mexique". This map both were replaced to credit René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle's 1682 French claim of the Mississippi watershed. He titles "La Louisiane" across the map with a line at the Appalachians in the east and Red River in the west. He leaves the British Colonies and Spain with the Rio Grande Valley but no claim to Florida. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. He also served as the Royal Geographer to the King of France.

The work was published in Amsterdam in 1733 by Covens and Mortier. Provenance: Birmingham-Southern College collection Van der Aa - Map of Central America: Guadalajara, Yucatan Peninsula, Honduras, Costa Rica (Explorer: Ferdinand Cortes) Description of the work: This rare historic engraving is by Pieter van der Aa's De Aanmerkens-waardige Voyagien door Francoisen, Italiaanen, Deenen, Hoogduytsen en andere Vreemde Volkeren gedaan na Oost- en West-Ind. The work was published in Leyden (Leiden) by the author in 1706. Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch cartographer, publisher, and book seller. He was appointed to the bookseller trade from the age of 9 and went on to own a bookshop and auction house. He published many maps in his time, and became best known for his atlases on exploration and noted voyages. Much of what he published was composite atlases in which he utilized many other publishers plates and prints including Carel Allard and Frederik De Wit as well as his own work. De Wit - Map of South America Description of the work: This remarkable folio engraving from a composite atlas of maps from Frederick De Wit. It was published in Amsterdam after 1688. It features original hand-coloring. De Wit published composite atlases using plate stock of his own and other Amsterdam map publishers. This included maps from the likes of Hondius, Bleau, and Visscher. "The De Wit composite or 'dual-purpose' atlas is an early example of an atlas planned at its outset to serve as a land and a sea atlas in one. Koeman lists these works according to the number of maps and by and large this progression gives a fair idea of their development and therefore dates, beginning in the early 1660s. But he acknowledges it is not accurate and often subject to revised opinion. The index is quite unlike any of those listed in Koeman." (Wardington Catalogue) Frederik De Wit (1629-1706) created a leading publishing firm in Amsterdam during the golden age of Dutch cartography. He was a catographer and mapseller that was best known for his atlases and his Dutch town maps. After De Wit's passing his wife, Maria, ran the shop for a few years before selling. At this point, most of his plates went to Pieter Mortier.

World. Guillaume Delisle, Mappe-Monde Dressee sur les Observations de Mrs. de l'Academie Royale des Sciences et Quelques Autres et sur les Memoires les Plus Recens..., 1700 (dated). Hand Color. This is an early edition of this large, double-hemisphere map and illustrates this famous French cartographer's crisp, elegant style. The title cartouche is centered on the French royal coat of arms and allegorical female representations of the four continents. Another cartouche contains Delisle's imprint with his address at Quai de l'Horloge, where Delisle moved in 1707. The map is up-to-date for the period with the most recent exploration routes charted in the oceans, including those of Tasman and Dampier. In keeping with Delisle's desire for accuracy, the Pacific Northwest coast of North America is left blank above C. Mendocin, there is no evidence of Antarctica, and only a partial coastline of New Zealand is depicted. Delisle used accounts from French explorers and colonizers of the Gulf of Mexico region. He also had access to accounts from survivors of La Salle's expedition in the late 1680's. Despite his efforts to produce highly accurate maps, this map shows New Guinea connected to Australia, and it appears that Japan is connected to the mainland ( Terre de Yeco) to the north. In addition, Terre de la Compagnie appears to the northeast of Japan with a partial outline continuing in the western hemisphere accompanied by a note regarding its discovery by Dom Jean de Gama. Engraved by Berey. LITERATURE: Shirley #603.

First Map to name New Orleans: De L'Isle - Map of Louisiana and the Course of the Mississippi (Eastern America) [Carte de la Louisiane et du cours du Mississipi]

        Est: $4,000 - $8,000

This early map of America was done by Guillaume de l'Isle (Delisle) and entitled "Carte de la Louisiane et du cours du Mississipi." This was published by Guillaume De L'Isle in Paris in 1718. “Geographically, politically, and historically this is one of the most important maps of the Mississippi Valley. Quickly copied, widely referred to, it was the chief authority for the Mississippi River for over fifty years…” (Cumming et al, p. 156) This is the second state of Delisle's map of Louisiana. It is the first map of America to name New Orleans after it was founded in 1718 (absent to the first state of the map). The map is essential to the history of cartography in the United States and one of the most important of North America. The first state of the map was the first map to indicate Texas (Mission de los Teijas established in 1716).

This early map of America was done by Guillaume de l'Isle (Delisle) and entitled "Carte du Mexique et de la Floride des Terres Angloises et des Isles Antilles du Cours et des Environs …" This map was published in Paris in 1708 by Chez l'auteur. The first state of the map was printed in 1703 with this being the fourth state of the map. The map is described by Tooley as illustrating ".. an area from the Great Lakes to New Mexico and southwards to Panama and Venezuela, and includes the West Indies. The locations of various Indian tribes and villages, French and English forts are shown." The cartouche was designed by C. Simonneau. It was the first printed map to accurately depict the course and mouth of the Mississippi River.
