      Charles Delin (Dutch 1756-1818) Oil on Canvas “Portrait of Captain Obed Bunker of Nantucket”, depicted attired in black jacket, white waistcoat, collar, and cravat, in molded giltwood frame, canvas lined, stretcher with old pasted paper label inscribed “Capt. Obed Bunker/Painted in Amsterdam, 1800”. Notes: in-painting to jacket and cravat (repair to lapel) 17 ¼ in. x 13 7/8 in. Framed 19 ½ in. x 16 ¼ in. Obed Bunker was an expatriate whaling captain between the Revolutionary and the War of 1812, Master of the ship Romulus out of Halifax, and the ship Greyhound out of Dunkirk.       Charles Delin (Dutch 1756-1818) Oil on Lined Canvas “Portrait of a Ship Captain”, depicted half-length, 3/4 profile wearing a brown jacket with brass buttons, white waistcoat and bon-knotted cravat with gold and seed pearl stickpin, two vessels visible in stormy seas beyond; in ebonized frame with gilt liner; Note: sparse in-painting and scattered stains 21 in. x 17 in. Framed 25.5 in. x 21.25 in. This portrait was de-accessioned from the Historic Museum of New Jersey, identified as Captain John Brown of Nantucket. Starbuck’s “History of the American Whale Fishery” records a Capt. John Brown as master of the ship Cato in 1800, on a two-year voyage to Woolwich, returning with a full cargo of whale oil. Starbuck also records presumably the same Capt. John Brown as master of the ship Thomas in 1817, on a year and a half voyage to the Pacific, returning with 1,000 barrels of a sperm oil and 500 barrels of whale oil. Benes’ curriculum raisonné of Delin lists ten known portraits by the artist of Nantucket whaling captains; a strikingly similar portrait, of Captain Calsworth (ca. 1805-1810), is in the collection of the Nantucket Historical Association. This portrait is a heretofore unknown eleventh painting. Provenance: The Historic Museum of New Jersey Private Collector in Hartford, Connecticut Present owner since 1960

      During the battle, in which 83 officers and seamen out of a crew of 103 were killed or wounded, the "Lawrence" was blown to pieces by the combined fire power of the British forces. Lt. Yarnall refused to leave the deck and fought with the ship to the last. Perry decided to switch his flag to the "Niagara" giving his immortal command "Don't Give Up the Ship" to Yarnall, who managed to get the ship back to its home port of Erie, Pennsylvania. Oil on canvas, 21 x 17 inches. Provenance: Purchased by Israel Sack, Inc. from the direct descendants of the sitter.Exhibited: Peter Benes and the Historical Society of Old Newbury, "Charles Delin: Port Painter of Maastricht and Amsterdam," July 20-October 20, 1985, pp. 80-81, no. 54.

      Oil on canvas applied to paperboard, 22 1/4 x 17 inches, sight. Unsigned. In a period molded wood frame. The port painter Charles Delin painted a number of American sea captains and their families in Salem, Nantucket, Newburyport, Plymouth, and Philadelphia. Stylistically the offered lot is nearly identical to a portrait of John Walker (1775-1811) of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, discussed and illustrated in Peter Benes and the Historical Society of Old Newbury, "Charles Delin: Port Painter of Maastricht and Amsterdam," July 20-October 20, 1985, p. 71, no. 47.
