      • 18th C. French Engraving after Titian "Depart d'Adonis"
        Mar. 13, 2022

18th C. French Engraving after Titian "Depart d'Adonis"

        Est: $400 - $600

Artist: Titian (also Tiziano Vecelli or Vecellio, Venetian, c. 1488/90-1576). Engraving: Jean Louis Delignon (French, 1755-1804). Etching: Antoine Jean Duclos (French, 1742-1795). "Depart d'Adonis" from series "Galerie du Palais Royal" ca. 1786 to 1795. A stunning hand-colored engraving after Titian (in reverse) depicting Venus attempting to restrain Adonis, who is about to depart for a hunt; Venus fears (rightly so) that Adonis will be killed. Adonis holds four leashed dogs in his right hand and a spear in his raised left hand. Cupid snoozes beneath a tree on the far right, and there are 12 lines of descriptive text (in French) below. All is surrounded by a decorative egg-and-dart border. Size of plate mark: 16.5" L x 11.25" W (41.9 cm x 28.6 cm) Size of sheet: 19.75" L x 11.875" W (50.2 cm x 30.2 cm) Size of matte: 22" L x 16" W (55.9 cm x 40.6 cm) Titian's painting entitled "Venus and Adonis" is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (accession number 49.7.16). According to the curatorial description, "Tales from Ovid’s Metamorphoses inspired Titian to paint what he called poesie, or poetry in paint. Here, Venus tries to stop her lover from departing for the hunt, fearing—correctly—that he would be killed. The mood of sensuality, conveyed by the beautiful depiction of Venus, seen from the back, enhances the viewer’s sense of the tragic end to this story, expressed through their exchanged glances and the frightened Cupid." See this print in the collection of The British Museum (accession number 1855,0609.415). Provenance: private Lucille Lucas collection, Crested Butte, Colorado, USA All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
