Delano, William Adams (American, 1874-1960) Group of 5 Landscape Paintings

        Est: $600 - $900

Delano, William Adams (1874-1960) Watercolor Paintings. Delano, William Adams (1874-1960) Five Landscapes. Watercolor. All signed with penciled monogram, two are dated '25. Good condition. All five paintings measure approximately 3 inches x 5 inches. All frames measure 7 inches x 8 inches. From Askart.com: William Adams Delano (1874-1960) was a prominent artist and architect who practiced in New York City from the early 1900's until the 1950's. His firm, Delano & Aldrich, was well known as designers of country houses of high society. Born in 1874, Delano was the son of Eugene Delano, a partner in the investment banking firm of Brown Brothers. He attended Lawrenceville Preparatory School and entered Yale in 1895. Following Yale, he studied at the school of architecture at Columbia University, graduating from that institution in 1899. While there he took courses in painting and drawing from John Ferguson Weir (1841-1926), the founding director of the Yale Art School. As a young man he studied at the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts, spending 5 years there and graduating in 1902. While living in Europe he did many watercolors, either of architectural scenes or countryside scenes of the areas he was visiting. He signed these early works in script with his initials, "WAD." In 1903, he formed a partnership with his old friend Chester Holmes Aldrich (1871-1940). This fortuitous union would last until Aldrich's death in 1940. When not working on new building commissions, he continued to paint watercolors mostly of pastoral scenes and beach scenes. The children often depicted in these painting are his relatives and their friends. William S. Delano married Louisa Potter, daughter of prominent Victorian architect Edward Tuckerman Potter (1831-1904) in 1907. Between 1914 & 1915 he built an estate for his family at Syosset, Long Island called "Muttontown Corners," and on the wall in the garden were little wrought iron lizards climbing out of the fountain. A little "squiggle," which was really a lizard climbing a wall, was often added to his signature and eventually became the monogram he used on his paintings. Time wrote an article on Delano in 1930 in which they stated, among other things, that he "paints watercolors for diversion." As country house building slowed in the late 1930's and early 1940's, Delano & Aldrich worked on other commissions. During this period they were known for their public works like the original LaGuardia Airport (1940) and their work as the "un-official architects of the White House." Following Aldrich's death, Delano was also responsible for the restoration of the White House (1949-1951) during the Truman Administration. William A. Delano and his son, Richard, were distant cousins of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882-1945). Richard was also a painter and his work is often confused with that of his father. The type of signature present on a painting defines who the work was actually by. William A. Delano only signed his works "WAD" or with the "Lizard Monogram," he never used the name "Delano" to sign his paintings. His son Richard is the member of the family who signed his works "Delano." Richard was a well respected artist in his own right. William Adams Delano held a number of important positions during his life, including as a professor of architecture at Columbia University (1903-1910), member of the Commission on Fine Arts established for the planning and design of Washington, D.C. (1924-1928), member of the Planning Board of the 1939 World's Fair, President of the American Society for Beaux-Arts Architects (1927-1929), and President of the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects (1928-1930). He received several awards during his lifetime, including the gold medal of the National Institute of Arts and Letters (1940) and the gold medal of the American Institute of Architects (1953).
