        Oct. 03, 2024

BEAUFORD DELANEY (1901 - 1979) Untitled (Greenwich Village Street, New York.)

        Est: $250,000 - $350,000

BEAUFORD DELANEY (1901 - 1979) Untitled (Greenwich Village Street, New York.) Oil on linen canvas, circa 1945-46. 457x546 mm; 18x21½ inches. Signed and dated (indistinctly) in oil, lower right recto. Signed (three times) and inscribed "181 Greene St" (twice)" and "NY" in oil on the stretcher bars, verso. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist, Professor Kenneth Lash, California and Iowa; thence by descent, private collection, Washington (2006). Kenneth Lash (1918-1985) was a poet, essayist, university professor, and chair of art and humanities departments. He was a contributor to many literary reviews and journals, including The New Yorker, editor of the New Mexico Quarterly and a longtime contributing editor at the North American Review. Before his service in the US Navy, Lash lived in New York in the early 1940s where he frequented many jazz clubs and after-hours sessions at trumpeter Frankie Newton's Greenwich Village loft, blocks away from Beauford Delaney's studio. Lash was part of a support network of friends and patrons who assisted Delaney both before and after his trip to Paris. In his Delaney biography, Leeming writes that Beauford Delaney mentioned how "my good friend" Kenneth Lash made his trip to Vinalhaven, Maine possible in a June 26, 1946 letter to Henry Miller. This richly impastoed depiction of the Village is a very scarce and significant example of Beauford Delaney's New York period. Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Beauford Delaney moved to New York City in 1929. Delaney was inspired by the vibrant, modern landscape of the city, particularly the parks and streets close to his studio apartment on the top of 181 Greene Street. As early as 1940, his paintings of New York also reflected a new modernist approach. According to Ann E. Gibson, Delaney's cityscapes were "recognizable but hardly realist, his forms knit into a single fabric, often united by a consistently textured surface, held together by integrated nets of color and line coexisting on the surfaces of his paintings." This expressive painting embodies Beauford Delaney's modernist approach of the 1940s. His depiction of a street corner and the El train line is particularly infused color through a densely layered impasto. Delaney painted several other similar versions of street scenes between 1944 and 1946, often nocturnal views and each with Van Gogh-like swirling brushwork; see Untitled (Night Scene), circa 1944 and Greenwich Village, 1945 (see Canterbury fig. 7 and pl. 8). Here Delaney's impasto unifies the entire space, from the street to the clouds in the sky, and pushes the painting into abstraction. He includes a sole figure as a dark silhouette passing like a specter across the foreground. Delaney would later revisit this New York scene in Paris with his Street Scene, 1968, painted predominantly in yellow. Canterbury pp. 14, 29 and 39; Leeming p. 80.

Beauford Delaney (American/Tennessee, 1901-1979) pastel on wove paper bust-length portrait of a man with a pipe in his mouth, 1930s. The man, with dark hair and goatee, wears a brown suit with a bright blue tie and stares intensely at the viewer with furrowed brow. He sits or stands before a bookcase filled with colorful bindings that create a geometrically patterned background. With Beauford Delaney estate stamp en verso. Unsigned. Unframed. Sheet: 25" H x 19 3/4" W. Note: Modernist artist Beauford Delaney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. An apprentice to artist Lloyd Branson, Delaney was encouraged by his mentor to study art in Boston. In 1929 he traveled to New York and established himself as a prominent artist of the Harlem Renaissance. There he gained the attention and admiration of well-known writers and artists such as James Baldwin, Georgia O’Keefe, Alfred Stieglitz, and many others. His departure from New York to Paris in 1953 also marked his transition from figurative compositions to abstractions with a focus on color and light. Numerous portraits by Delaney demonstrate the artist’s fauvist tendencies in regard to his use of vibrant, non-local color for expressive effect. Additionally, the penetrating stare and psychological intensity of this pastel suggest the influence of modernist portraiture by luminaries like Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Henri Matisse. PROVENANCE: Estate of Beauford Delaney, Derek L. Spratley, Esquire, court-appointed administrator.

With stamped holes and spiral-binding preforations down the left edge. Estate ink stamped on the verso. Provenance: the estate of the artist; thence by descent, Ogust Delaney Stewart, Knoxville; private collection, New York. Ms. Ogust Delaney Stewart was the artist's niece. Exhibited: Beauford Delaney: From New York to Paris, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, November 21, 2004 – February 20, 2005, Knoxville Museum of Art, Tennessee, April 16 – June 25, 2005, Greenville County Museum of Art, South Carolina, July 30 – October 8, 2005 and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, November 13, 2005–January 29, 2006. Illustrated: Patricia Canterbury, Beauford Delaney: From New York to Paris, fig. 16, p. 47. This dynamic and vivid abstraction is an excellent example from Beauford Delaney's important body of work on paper. It was likely made during Delaney's third year in Paris. In the winter of 1955, Delaney moved out of his hotel studio to an apartment in the suburb of Clamart - there he enjoyed more space and light to work. This densely layered composition displays Delaney's bolder experimentation in the mid-1950s as he simplified his abstraction and focused on the expressiveness of color. Delaney had solo exhibitions at the Galerie Prismes in both May and June of 1956 and later traveled to Ibiza, Spain in August. Leeming p. 130; Canterbury p. 36.

Floated in a modern wood frame with ivory mat. Sheet: 10 1/2" H x 8" W. Frame: 17 13/16" x" 15 1/4" W. Biographical note: Modernist artist Beauford Delaney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. Delaney experimented throughout his career with a wide variety of styles, including his personal brands of realism, fauvism, post-impressionism, and abstract expressionism. His departure from New York to Paris in 1953 also marked his transition from figurative compositions to abstractions with a focus on color and light. In 1978, the year before he died, the Studio Museum in Harlem initiated its Black Master series with a retrospective of his work. Delaney drew many portraits in color pastel during his New York period. His still lifes are considerably scarcer, and most known works date from the 1940s. In 1932, Delaney had enough success that he gave up his job at the Whitney Studio Galleries and moved into an apartment on 22 Downing Street in the Village. He had a second solo exhibition in May in the New York Public Library at the branch on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Leeming pp. 37-43.

Beauford Delaney 1901-1979 No. 6 Portrait, JFK 1963 pastel on paper 16 x 12-3/4 inches Signed and dated From LES AMIS DE BEAUFORD DELANEY, A BLOG THAT DESCRIBES THE EFFORTS OF A SMALL GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS TO PRESERVE THE FRENCH GRAVESITE, AND THE MEMORY, OF PAINTER BEAUFORD DELANEY (Dr. Monique Y. Wells): ... the news of President Kennedy’s assassination would weigh heavily on Beauford’s heart. In November 1963, Beauford received a letter from Larry, enclosed with one of his drawings. Beauford wrote back, saying: Dear Larry, You beautiful scene… arrived today along with your living message [.] It was as if you were here in person [.] I immediately placed it upon the wall where I can see it all the time [.] We here are all overwhelmed with the death of President Kennedy and life and work are temporarily suspended. However, I am delighted with your spirit… and it is present in your work. [image] No 6 Portrait, JFK Pastel © Estate of Beauford Delaney by permission of Derek L. Spratley, Esquire, Court Appointed Administrator When Beauford tells Larry that reading his message made it feel as though he was physically present, Beauford puts forwards something of great importance – the letter’s capacity to carry the soul of the writer within its pages. Receipt of Larry’s letter works against Beauford's self-alienation and alienation of the world. Though Kennedy’s death is a considerable loss, Beauford recognizes Larry’s art and his letter as a source of light during a dark time. For Beauford, both the practice of art and the practice of letter writing are passionate investments in the world and in other people.
