Tekening (First Drawing) (1971) Unique Piece Laminated drawing, 30.9 x 60.8 cm Provenance: Collection B. de Wit, Amsterdam, gifted by the artist Literature: Blotkamp 375 Note: After his stay in Denmark, Dekkers created a series of transparent drawings on thin translucent paper, where he made an identical geometric drawing on both sides. The transparency introduced a depth to the drawings that had not been seen in his previous work. These works were exhibited at the Haags Gemeentemuseum, but due to the thin nature of the paper, the works were not displayed correctly; they were slightly curled in a showcase, much to Dekkers’ disappointment. In collaboration with Multi Art Points, Dekkers found a solution by laminating the works with a matte surface, allowing the thin paper to be autonomously exhibited. This lot on offer is the first laminated result. Dekkers followed with two series: 'Transparent 1' and 'Transparent 2', each consisting of 4 similar drawings. These transparent series are a unique addition to Dekkers' body of work.

Verschoven Diagonaal als Zaagsnede (Relief with Shifted Diagonal Saw Cut) (1967) Painted board relief, H. 75 x W. 75 x D. 1.9 cm Provenance: Collection Anderson, Amsterdam Literature: C. Blotkamp, Ad Dekkers, Staatsuitgeverij, The Hague, 1981, no. 100 Note: The relief can be hung two ways; diamond-shaped and right-handed. Adriaan "Ad" Dekkers feels it’s impossible to create a real sense of space on a flat surface, not even with a simple three-dimensional form. The prominent Dutch artist became best known for his reliefs and monumental sculptures involving simple geometric forms, which he made in the 1960s. From 1954 to 1958, Dekkers studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, and focused primarily on the drawing of still lives and landscapes. A few years after his graduation, he sought increasing inspiration in De Stijl artists, such as Piet Mondrian, with whom he shared the view that universal truths should be expressed in the simplest and purest means possible. From 1965, he started making reliefs in editions, often cast in polyester, wood, or aluminium. By painting his reliefs monochrome and mostly white, the effect of light could be optimally utilized. Additionally, Dekkers greatly reduced the number of compositional elements and accentuated the specific character of each of the geometric basic forms by a single systematic intervention, which is, in this work on offer, the simple line carved in the wood. He called these, often white, flat sufaces on which a linear division was applied, ‘zaagsneden’ (saw cuts). Dekkers was represented by the Amsterdam art dealer Riekje Swart, who specialised in avant-garde, constructivist, and systematised art and worked with international artists such as Lucio Fontana, Sol Lewitt, Agnes Martin, François Morellet, Peter Struycken, and Gerhard von Graevenitz. Supported by Jean Leering, director of the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, his work was also included in seminal exhibitions such as the 1967 Biennale of São Paolo, together with Jan Schoonhoven and Peter Struycken, and Documenta 4 in Kassel in 1968, in a gallery room shared with Elsworth Kelly. *AD DEKKERS (1933-1974) Driedeling door oplopende zaagsneden, 1971. Hout. Titel, datum, techniek, afmetingen en signatuur in kapitalen op verso. Herkomst: ex.verz. J.van Cauwenberge, Deinze; privécollectie Antwerpen. In around 1970 the line became increasingly important as stand-alone element in Dekkers's oeuvre. In Driedeling door oplopende zaagsneden the depth of the grooves determines the line. These grooves are created using a mechanical saw. Applied from deep to shallow, they make the thickness of the sheet visible. This creates a spatial effect; not online do they divide the surface but they also disrupt it. The line is no longer suggested, but is actually present. In Houtgrafiek N° XXII (lot 163) the grooves have become detached from the edges of the surface, thus enhancing their independent character. By means of their length, their position and their direction, they have an active influence on the white surface. For Dekkers his art was not only a translation of personal feelings, it was most importantly a way of communicating the collectively experienced essences of human existence through images. With basic resources such as line and the colour white, he strove to reveal this essence, the essence of our being. Bron: P.
