        DEITCH, KIM (1944-) "Dead of Too Much Livin." Color pencil on paper; 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Sketch of Waldo the Cat, the artist's most popular character, signed lower right by foot. Kim Deitch, son of animator Gene Deitch, became a fixture of the Underground Comix Movement through his work in the East Village Other in 1967. His characters inhabit an alternative retro universe to the famous Hollywood animation studios of the 1930s. His most highly praised work is the graphic novel The Boulevard of Broken Dreams (2002). His best known invention is Waldo, the wisecracking Postmodern variant of such old school cartoon stars as Felix the Cat and Krazy Kat. Nd

Color version of black and white double-page spread published in the graphic novel of the same title by Kim Deitch with Simon Deitch (Seattle, WA: Fantagraphic Books, 1993). Hand-colored and -detailed illustration over printed background on paper. 253x305 mm; 10x12 inches, on 11x16 1/2-inch sheet. Signed "Kim Deitch" in margin at lower right. Hinged to board; matted and framed. Provenance: Bess Cutler Gallery; Private collection, New York. Deitch was part of the underground comix movement of the 1960s. His work often centers on fictionalized histories of the American animation industry and features variations of characters from beloved classic comics and cartoons, such as Waldo, a black feline reminiscent of Felix the Cat, pictured here at lower center.

        Kim Deitch - Waldo Pin Up/Poster Original Art (No Publisher, 1994). This piece of art should be a real treat for anyone who appreciates the work of Kim Deitch. Rendered in ink and colored with color pencils and watercolor, it contains many of the scenes and motifs that Deitch has explored and expanded on throughout his career. A crazy carnival scene straight out of Waldo World is in the foreground, with the easily recognizable Boulevard of Broken Dreams looming in the background. The incredibly detailed composition offers hours of enjoyment for the dedicated viewer, and the brilliant candy-bright color scheme must be seen to be appreciated. The artwork is professionally matted and framed, with an overall size of 28.5" x 24" with an image area of 22" x 17". The piece is in Excellent condition. If you feel up for a challenge, try counting all the faces in this scene - almost everything has a face!

        Kim Deitch - Pictopia #2 Cover Separation Art (Fantagraphics, 1992). Used to create the color separations to the cover of Gary Groth and Robert Boyd's Pictopia. This interesting and attractive piece consists of an acetate overlay with the black line art on top of Kim Deitch's mixed-media color art. The color is rendered in a deft combination of colored pencil and tempera paint. Handsomely matted and framed, this piece measures 23" x 16.5" overall with an image area of 17.5" x 11". The piece is in Excellent condition. Definitely a prime piece of Deitch dementia, with our feline friend -- wild, wacky Waldo!
