Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) Maurice Sendak was a renowned author and illustrator of children’s books. Sendak is best known for writing and illustrating the critically acclaimed,Where the Wild Things Are. His oeuvre of books he wrote and illustrated also include,In the Night Kitchen and Outside Over There, in addition to the many other books he drew illustrations for. The dark and moody, yet realistic nature of his illustrations and style were directly influenced by his own childhood – growing up during the Depression, World War II and being sick for a majority of his youth. As far as he could remember, Sendak always loved to draw. In high school he worked part time for All-American Comics and later took a job making window displays for F.A.O Schwartz. Sendak was an early member of the National Board of Advisors of Children’s Television Workshop during the development stages of,Sesame Street, and created the television program, Seven Little Monsters. Among many awards and achievements, Sendak received the Hans Christian Anderson Award for illustration in 1970 and was inducted into the New York Writers Hall of Fame in 2013.
