Wilfrid Gabriel De Glehn (1870 - 1951) Watercolor and graphite on paper, signed lower left, measures 6.5 x 10 inches and 13.5 x 16.5 inches. Wilfred de Glehn was thoroughly cosmopolitan in his upbringing and outlook. He was born Wilfred Gabriel von Glehn in Sydenham, South London, and was educated at Brighton College. His father, Alexander von Glehn, was involved in the building of narrow-gauge railways in France, as well as being a coffee-merchant. Wilfred left Brighton College in 1889, spent a very brief period at the Royal Academy Schools, South Kensington, and had enrolled at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris by 1891. Wilfred first met John Singer Sargent when he was still a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The American painter Edwin Austin Abbey hired Wilfred as his assistant on the ambitious mural decorations that he and Sargent had been commissioned to produce for the Boston Public Library. This working relationship developed into a firm friendship that lasted far beyond the period of the commission. Wilfrid and Sargent shared a fundamental cosmopolitan outlook.

Wilfrid De Glehn Gardens of Blois Oil Painting

          Est: $8,000 - $12,000

United Kingdom, Massachusetts,1870-1951 Impressionist work titled "Jardins de Blois" depicting a vibrant Spring day in the French town; capturing its remarkable forests and gardens along the Loire River. A large oak tree stands prominently in the foreground surrounded by red and white wild flowers with a woman with brimmed hat walking a trail in the background. The color and technique used in this painting are equivalent to that of "Summer Morning" in the Tate, or his record setting "Under The Willows" (Christies New York, Important American Paintings, 5/19/2005, Lot 57). As an artist De Glehn was a close friend and painted alongside John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). In 1904 Wilfrid De Glehn married fellow artist Jane Emmet (1873-1961) and soon after began traveling Europe with Sargent to further their painting practice. With the outbreak of World War I Wilfrid and Jane ceased their travels and joined the British Hospital for French Soldiers in Haute-Marne, France in 1915. They stayed for one year returning to England in 1916. After the war Wilfrid and Jane would spend their Summers in Cornwall, England and Winters in France for the next decade; the period in which this painting was executed. Truly an exceptional example of the artist's work and overall a magnificent Impressionist painting.
