      Antoine Jean Defehrt (around 1723 Huring - 1774 Paris) after François Lemoyne (1688 Paris - 1737 ibid.): Leto on the run, c. 1800, Copper engraving Technique: Copper engraving on Paper Inscription: Lower middle signed in the printing plate: "F. Le Moine Pinxit | De F. Gr du Cabinet du Roy Sculpsit". At the lower part inscribed in the printing plate: "La Tone | Dediée a Monsieur Mesnars de Clesne Maitre des Comptes et Premier Commia de la Maison du Roy. Par son très hunble et très obeissant Serviteur de Franqueville". Date: c. 1800 Description: Leto was the daughter of the Titans Coeus and Phoebe. She gave birth to Artemis and Apollo, the children of Zeus, on the island of Delos. As Hera, Zeus' wife, was furious with Leto, she fled through Lycia. When she was thirsty and wanted to drink water from a well, the farmers disturbed her by stirring up mud and making the water undrinkable. Leto punished them by turning them all into frogs.
