Deen was born in Pennsylvania and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia. He is best known for his landscape paintings and often favored painting en plein air at the rivers at Rockville, Fort Hunter, and Perdix. This painting shows the large maple tree that was outside the widow of the painter. He did numerous views of the tree much as Monet painted his haystacks at Giverney. In newer frame with linen liner. MEASUREMENTS: 8-1/2" x 6". Overall with frame 11-5/8" x 9". CONDITION: Excellent.

        DESCRIPTON: Ira Deen (Pennsylvania, 1874-1952). Painting. Oil on canvas laid down on board. The Maple Tree. Signed lower right "IJ Deen". This painting shows the large maple tree that was outside of Deen's bedroom window and was the subject of some of his most famous works. This work probably dates from the 1920's or 1930's. In that period, Deen's palette was soft and related closely to late 19th century painting. The effects of the Depression were such that Deen painted smaller works such as this example that were more affordable. New frame. MEASUREMENTS: 6-1/2" x 8-7/8". Overall with frame 10-3/4" x 13". CONDITION: Excellent.

        DESCRIPTION: Ira Deen (Pennsylvania, 1874-1952). Painting. Oil on canvas. A Farm East of Harrisburg. Signed lower left "I.J. Deen". Pencil notation to stretcher verso "Farm Near Harrisburg, Penn Ira Deen 1938". This painting is typical of Ira Deen's golden period of painting in the 1930's and 1940's. The farm is probably near Wildwood as this was a favorite area for Deen to paint. The work shows cattle in the middle ground drinking from a stream with woods in the fall on either side. Exhibited: Historical Society of Dauphin County. Framed. MEASUREMENTS: 17-1/2" x 23-3/8". Overall with frame 19-3/4" x 25-3/4". CONDITION: No defects noted.
