Dawn Adair DeDeaux (American/New Orleans, b. 1952) , A Book of Judgments, 1991, collective book featuring the works of Orleans Parish prison inmates produced in workshops conducted by New Orleans artists, signed and numbered "5/25", h. 12 in., w. 19 1/4 in., d. 3 in., steel and mixed media binding. Note: To the Reader This book explores the feelings and innermost thoughts of men, women and boys who are locked up – some fighting for their lives, others convicted, never to go home again. Some of the selections are poems. Some are stories or paintings about past experiences or about something that has changed us, while we were here. This book is serious and not play. A lot of hurt and pain is within these pages. Please understand. And think about what you read. -Wendell J. Profit (class participant) Dawn DeDeaux’s A Book of Judgment is a collaborative effort between local Louisiana artists and Orleans Parish prison inmates resulting in this incredible mixed media expression of the hopes, dreams, sadness, and anger of the local incarcerated population. Workshops were led by artists Dawn DeDeaux, Julie Ebel, Tina Girouard, Leonard Earl Johnson, Dale Milford, Owen Murphy, Georgia Ross, Josephine Sacabo, Charlie Smith, Dalt Wonk and Howard Jones, each teaching their trade to a group of eager-to-learn inmates. The collection is appropriately bound in a metal cage, mimicking prison bars and reminding the reader of the many ruined lives brimming with untapped potential left to suffer in confinement. It remains a haunting reflection of the state’s prison industrial complex.
