ALEXANDRE GABRIEL DECAMPS (1803-1860), attribué La Caravane Huile sur panneau monogrammé en bas à droite. Inscription au dos. Dimensions : 21,5 x 32,5 cm Peintre français, dessinateur, aquarelliste et graveur d’histoire, de scènes typiques et de genre né à Paris, il est l’un des plus brillants représentants de l’Ecole orientaliste et romantique de son époque. Il suit une formation dans l’atelier d’Etienne Brouhot et se perfectionne chez Abel de Pujol tout en s’exerçant au Louvre à l’Ecole des grand maîtres flamands mais surtout de Rembrandt. Attiré très tôt par les sujets orientaux, Decamps est envoyé en mission en Grèce en compagnie du peintre Garneray, chargés de représenter la victoire de Navarin. Il poursuit son périple à Constantinople, en Asie Mineure et au Moyen-Orient, devenu pour lui source d’inspiration. Il débute au Salon de 1928, mais c’est en 1931 et plus encore en 1934 qu’il assoit définitivement sa réputation d’ « inventeur de l’Orient ». Après ce coup d’éclat, il voyage en Italie et étudie les œuvres de Raphaël et du Titien. Sa santé se dégrade vers 1853, mais Decamps obtiendra encore un immense succès à l’Exposition Universelle de 1855, présentant une large rétrospective de son œuvre. Principaux musées : un partie importante de son œuvre est conservée au Louvre, au Musée Condé de Chantilly et à la Wallace Collection de Londres, mais également au Metropolitan New York, Art Institute Chicago, l’Hermitage Saint-Pétersbourg, Musée d’Orsay Paris, Courtauld Institute Londres, Rijksmusem Amsterdam, etc.

ALEXANDRE-GABRIEL DECAMPS (1803, Paris - 1860, Fontaineableau). "Algerian scene". Mixed media on cardboard. Signed in the lower left corner. Size: 30 x 29 cm, 47.5 x 57 cm (frame). Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps was a French painter. In his youth, he travelled in the Orient, and his work would be included in the French Romantic school, together with Delacroix and Ingres. Although most of his life was spent in Paris, he used his travelling experience to depict biblical scenes such as "Joseph Sold by his Brothers", "Moses Rescued from the Nile", or his scenes from the life of Samson, nine sketches in charcoal and white. His historical paintings include "The Defeat of the Cimbrians", depicting a horde of barbarians against a disciplined army. A varied and prolific painter, he visited Barbizon and depicted everyday life in France (as well as Algeria) in a large series of genre paintings. He was passionate about sports and animals, especially dogs, horses and monkeys, which he painted with humour. He died in 1860, being knocked down by a horse while hunting in Fontainebleau.
