      JOSEPH RODEFER DECAMP (ME/MA/PA/FL/OH, 1858-1923)

      Est: $50,000 - $100,000

"View from the Sprague House, Prouts Neck, Maine" (on Bohemia Lane, off Winslow Homer Road), a seascape from the shore, oil on canvas, signed lower left, inscribed "To my friend Sprague" and dated 1905, in the original hand carved gilt matched corner Arts & Crafts frame, OS: 32 1/2" x 37 1/2", SS: 22" x 27". Very good, untouched condition. Joseph Rodefer DeCamp (1858-1923) American Impressionist from Boston, one of the avant-garde group “The Ten”, which like parallel events on the Continent would show, provided a transition from the more staid academic studio schools, emphasizing plein air painting and a focus on light and atmosphere created by the use of loosely applied brilliant color. His portraits were more traditional, having studied under Frank Duveneck in Munich when young (both were raised in Cincinnati), and always remaining a member of the ‘Boston School’ of portraiture. But it was his landscapes and seascapes, transformed by time spent at Annisquam, Massachusetts and Prouts Neck, Maine, that would inspire generations of American painters. Few of his landscapes exist today, as many were destroyed in a tragic studio fire in Boston at the Harcourt Building in 1904; his Maine studio also burned. It is thought that fewer than 100 canvases survived between the two.

    • JOSEPH DECAMP, Portrait of Abraham Lincoln
      Oct. 13, 2018

JOSEPH DECAMP, Portrait of Abraham Lincoln

      Est: $1,000 - $2,000

Joseph DeCamp (American, 1858-1923). Dated 1897 lithograph portrait of Lincoln, signed. Exceedingly rare piece, commissioned personally by printer Louis Prang in 1896. This was to be part of a series of famous Americans' portraits by Prang, but -- according to a 1930 letter from a Prang employee -- production was halted in 1897 after fewer than a dozen of these were taken from the stone. This one is numbered 5 of 100 (which was the originally intended run) on a label affixed to the back of the print itself. The only other known example is in the Boston Library collection. Joseph DeCamp was one of the most famous portrait artists at the time and was paid $500 to make stone portraits of Lincoln and Webster for Prang. Lithograph framed to 30-1/2" x 23-1/2". Not laid down. (Frame's brass tag incorrectly states that it was copied from a painting by Thomas Hicks. This work was entirely DeCamp's, an image drawn from a photograph of Lincoln, curiously a photo showing him without a beard.)
